After that shocking story arc, Quill, along with the other Guardians (minus, sadly, Gamora), joined forces with the Avengers in order to bring down Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, but unfortunately, that actually ended up being Star-Lord's absolute lowest moment in the MCU thus far. Specifically, after the Guardians, Doctor Strange, Peter Parker/Spider-Man, and Tony Stark/Iron Man formulated a plan together that played to all of their strengths, they actually got incredibly close to removing the Infinity Gauntlet from Thanos' hand. However, when he learned of Gamora's death, Star-Lord lost control, punching Thanos out of his trance.
For years now, much of the MCU fanbase has therefore blamed Star-Lord for all that transpired at the end of Infinity War and in Avengers: Endgame, including myriad major character deaths. Even his return to the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 didn't really seem to fix this negative sentiment among the fans. However, there is one unexpected decision the MCU could make regarding Star-Lord's future that would be so cool that audiences would have to finally forgive him.
Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 Got Rid Of Star-Lord's God-Like Powers
Although Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was full of some brutal realizations for Star-Lord, particularly that his father was an evil Celestial bent on taking over all existence who also gave Quill's own mother cancer because she was too big of a distraction from his plan, the movie's revelations also meant Star-Lord discovering something pretty cool: He, himself, had god-like powers. Of course, Ego was only ever going to use those powers for his own ends, so it wasn't exactly good news for Star-Lord even then.
That is perhaps why maintaining these powers was nowhere near top of mind for Star-Lord when he realized his father was too dangerous and had to die. As Ego had told him, Star-Lord's powers were directly tied to his father; if Ego died, then he would no longer have these powers. Understandably, Star-Lord didn't really seem to care about that. From the moment he had learned that Ego killed his mom, in fact, destroying Ego was the only thing on his mind—he was actually willing to die for it.
While Star-Lord's reaction makes sense, though, it's really a shame that these powers were only briefly explored. Star-Lord is a compelling character, but seeing him wielding a completely new level of power was an exciting prospect. Theoretically, those powers are now gone; however, there are definitely ways the MCU could bring these powers back in upcoming projects, and doing so would be a great move for Star-Lord as a character overall.
The MCU Should Bring These Powers Back (& It Wouldn't Be That Hard)
Particularly considering Star-Lord has such a bad reputation in the MCU following Infinity War, it couldn't hurt to give him a massive level up by restoring these powers. In fact, that would be the perfect way to bring this character back and get him involved in some of the massive battles to come. Granted, the MCU would have to identify a way to make that story work, as Quill lost these powers some time ago. Yet, if there's one thing the MCU has proven, it's that there's always a way to bring something (or someone) back.
After all, the next Avengers movie, Avengers: Doomsday, is not only going to be bringing back Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America but also bringing Robert Downey Jr. back as Doctor Doom. While there are theories about how this could make sense, seemingly, the MCU is simply bringing RDJ back as an entirely different character. With that in mind, it really shouldn't be that difficult to explain the restoration of Star-Lord's powers that, presumably, he was actually born with.
In fact, questions to that effect have already been raised, as the MCU confirmed that Mantis is yet another one of Ego's children (making her Quill's half-sister), yet she seemed unaffected by Ego's death, at least in terms of her power and abilities. Surely, the MCU could find a way to make sense of this, and it would be the perfect next step in Star-Lord's story. When exactly that could happen is less clear, though.
What Will Star-Lord's MCU Future Look Like?
At present, Star-Lord's MCU future remains unknown. The ending of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 indicates that the character will return, but it doesn't say when that will happen or in what project. What's more, the end of that movie revealed that Quill had gone back to Earth, leaving the Guardians of the Galaxy to be with his maternal grandfather, whom he hadn't seen since the day his mother had died and he was abducted by the Ravagers and taken off the planet.
This ending seems to contradict the idea that Star-Lord will be back in future fights, as his story as a hero appeared to conclude with this return home, but clearly, that's far from the actual end. Interestingly, though, Chris Pratt's return in either Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars hasn't yet been confirmed. The star has actually made comments indicating that he won't be in either, although many believe that this is intentionally misleading audiences to cover up a surprise return.
If Pratt really is intentionally deceiving audiences of course remains to be seen, and it's likely that the truth won't be revealed until both movies have hit theaters. Whether he is in those movies or not, though, it would be absolutely brilliant to see not only Star-Lord's triumphant MCU return but also the restoration of his god-like powers, bringing about a whole new version of this currently still quite controversial character.
