For his fourth feature behind the camera, Emmy-winning comic Chris Rock is turning the camera back on his own industry.
The writer/director/actor/stand-up comedian/Oscar host will debut his new Hollywood drama “Misty Green” at the Toronto International Film Festival this year, with A24 taking the movie into the awards season corridor. The film stars “Slow Horses” series regular Rosalind Eleazar (who plays beleaguered British MI5 operative Louisa Guy on the Apple TV show) as an Emmy-winning actress in a tailspin who, years after her breakthrough in the industry, is now hustling for her second act. According to TIFF, the film “brilliantly satirizes the bigotry and hustle at the heart of Hollywood.”
“Misty Green” co-stars Adam Driver, Daniel Kaluuya, Anna Kendrick, Topher Grace, and Chris Rock himself. The trailer shows Misty weaving in and out of their lives in various degrees of taking drugs, having sex, looking for escape, and also trying to land an acting gig — harshly awakening to Amy Landecker kicking Misty out of “my husband’s apartment.” Misty now has a checkered past due to an on-set altercation with another cast member, making her, it appears, somewhat radioactive according to her agent.
Rock’s last feature behind the camera was more than a decade ago, with 2014’s “Top Five,” a meta romantic dramedy in which he starred as a comedian trying to make it as a serious actor. He also directed the comedies “Head of State” and “I Think I Love My Wife.”
A24 is also taking the Anthony Bourdain slice-of-life coming-of-ageer “Tony” into the awards window with an August release. The company also has the “To Catch a Predator” dramatization “Primetime” with Robert Pattinson, Jesse Eisenberg’s backstage musical-comedy “The Debut,” and Jordan Firstman’s Cannes smash “Club Kid”; the latter two are being shown around the fall festival circuit.
“Misty Green” world-premieres at TIFF as a Gala Presentation before A24 releases the movie later this year. Watch the trailer below.
