‘Spider-Noir’ Trailer: Watch the Adventures of Nicolas Cage’s Hardboiled Web-Slinger in Either Black and White or Color

If 2024’s “Ripley” whet your appetite for black-and-white cinematography on TV, a new balm has been offered to you from…a Marvel comic book show? Wouldn’t be the first time.

Spider-Noir,” a new Marvel TV series, will be released in two versions: one in color, and an “authentic black and white” version to better replicate the look of the classic noir films the show is paying tribute to. Amazon announced the news on Thursday, and released trailers for both versions of the show to demonstrate the difference.

“Spider-Noir” is based on the character “Spider-Man Noir,” an alternate version of the beloved superhero Spider-Man. First introduced via the 2009 comic of the same name and created by David Hine, Fabrice Sapolsky, Carmine Di Giandomenico, and Marko Djurdjević, the character — a grizzled, noir-style detective version of the web-slinger — is best known to general audiences for his appearance in the acclaimed 2018 animated film “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” where he was voiced by Nicolas Cage.

Cage reprises his role for the series, although the show otherwise lacks apparent connections to “Into the Spider-Verse” and the character’s name has been changed, from the familiar Peter Parker to Ben Reilly (a reference to a clone of Spider-Man in the comic books). Set in a 1930s New York, the series follows Ben as a down-on-his-luck private investigator who returns to his role as the city’s lone superhero following a personal tragedy.

The series also stars Lamorne Morris, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez, Abraham Popoola, Jack Huston, and Brendan Gleeson. Guest stars include Lukas Haas, Cameron Britton, Cary Christopher, Michael Kostroff, Scott MacArthur, Joe Massingill, Whitney Rice, Amanda Schull, Andrew Caldwell, Amy Aquino, Andrew Robinson, and Kai Caster.

“Spider-Noir” premieres May 25 on MGM+’s linear broadcast channel, before all eight episodes stream globally on Prime Video beginning May 27. Sony Pictures Television produces the series, which was developed for TV by showrunners Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot with “Into the Spider-Verse” producers Phil Lord, Chistopher Miller, and Amy Pascal. Harry Bradbeer, who previously directed episodes of “Fleabag” and “Killing Eve” directed the first two episodes of the series. Executive producers for the show include Cage, Bradbeer, Uziel, Lightfoot, Pavlina Hatoupis, Amy Pascal via Pascal Pictures, and Lord, Miller, Aditya Sood, and Dan Shear for their Lord Miller.
