Spider-Man: Brand New Day wasn't watched the way Marvel Studios and Sony intended.
Spider-Man was created by writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko in 1962, and quickly became everyone's favorite superhero. The character first appeared in the final issue of the anthology comic Amazing Fantasy #15. While the idea of a teenage hero with everyday struggles was initially rejected, the issue ended up being a major bestseller.
In a report by Variety, a bootleg version of Spider-Man: Brand New Day was leaked in full by an account with the name Frederick Bryan. The leaked bootleg reached 5.9 million accounts with over 143,000 likes and 10,000 reshares before the post was taken down nine hours later. Other accounts quickly downloaded and posted the copy, but they didn't last long and were quickly shut down. Sony has yet to comment on the situation.
Most recently, the other major summer blockbuster, Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, also starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, was leaked to the masses and reached 2.1 million views within two and a half hours before quickly being taken down. Universal later stated to Variety: "We became aware of the unauthorized posting of the film and immediately initiated takedown protocols. We take copyright infringement seriously and will pursue all appropriate remedies to protect our content and intellectual property rights."
However, both The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day are already breaking box office records despite the bootleg leaks circulating social media. Brand New Day made a record-breaking $72 million in previews, which surpassed Avengers: Endgame.
