Skye Wheatley charged with drink-driving: Mum of two considering professional help after passerby noticed her parked at McDonald's for hours - now she breaks her silence to the Mail

Skye Wheatley has broken her silence over a mid-range drink-driving charge, saying she is deeply disappointed in herself and hopes others can learn from her mistake.

Wheatley recorded a blood-alcohol reading of 0.119 on Saturday while parked outside a McDonald's and is due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on August 24. 

The former Big Brother Australia star, 32, tells the Daily Mail she is prepared to face the consequences of what she admits was a serious error in judgment.

She says she wants to take responsibility for her actions and use the experience to send a warning to others who might make the same mistake.

'I made a really poor decision and I'm deeply disappointed in myself,' she says.

'There isn't an excuse for what happened. I take responsibility for my actions and I know I have to deal with the consequences.'

She says one of the most confronting parts of the experience has been recognising how easily a poor decision involving alcohol can have lasting consequences.

'If anything good can come from me talking about this, I hope somebody else thinks twice,' she warns.

'Don't make the mistake I made. If you've been drinking, don't take the chance. It's just not worth it.'

Wheatley says she was parked outside a Gold Coast McDonald's trying to sober up for approximately four hours when a passerby contacted police. 

She was subsequently approached by officers and asked to take a breathalyser test. 

While she believes that context is important in explaining what occurred, Wheatley insists she is not raising it as an excuse for her actions.

'I don't want this to become about making excuses,' she says.

'I made the wrong decision. That's what I have to take responsibility for, and that's what I'm doing.'

The Daily Mail understands Wheatley has begun exploring professional support following the incident and has been provided with information about programs offering access to therapy, psychologists, doctors, and other support services.

The mother-of-two says the experience has also prompted her to reflect on her relationship with alcohol and the decisions she makes around drinking.

'I don't just want to say sorry because I've been caught in a bad situation and then forget about it,' she says.

'I want to learn something from this and actually make changes so I'm never sitting in this position again.'

Wheatley has built an enormous online audience since finding fame on Big Brother Australia in 2014 and knows many of her followers have grown up alongside her.

It's another reason she wants to speak candidly about making a mistake rather than pretending it didn't happen.

'I've shared so much of my life with people over the years. The good and the bad,' she says.

'I'm human and I got this wrong. I can't undo it, but I can decide what I do from here.'

She hopes speaking about the experience might make someone reconsider their own choices when it comes to drinking and driving.

'If you're questioning whether you're okay to drive, don't,' Wheatley says.

'Get an Uber, call someone, leave the car where it is. Whatever inconvenience that causes is nothing compared to what can happen when you make the wrong decision.'

For Wheatley, the focus now is on accepting the consequences and ensuring the mistake isn't one that defines her.

'I'm disappointed in myself that I put myself in this position, but I'm going to learn from it,' she says.

'Hopefully someone else can learn from my mistake too.'

Wheatley is due to appear before Southport Magistrates Court on August 24.
