Google's latest midrange smartphone is finally here. The Pixel 10a retails for $499 starting, and is currently available for preorder on the tech giant's online store. You could pay full price, but there is a better option. If you preorder the Pixel 10a through Verizon, you'll get the mobile device for free when you open a new line.

Ok, not "free." Carriers advertise these offers as totally free, but there's always red tape involved, like plan subscriptions or upgrades. Nothing is really free, but savings on a device via monthly bill credits are always welcome.
Usually, Verizon locks its $0 phone deals behind its most expensive plan. This time, however, you have more options. You can add the phone to either the Unlimited Welcome, Unlimited Plus, or Unlimited Ultimate plan, which cost $55, $70, and $80 per month for a single line, respectively. Those rates are also locked in for the next three years.
Verizon is selling the base 128GB model in Lavender (purple) and Obsidian (black). A 256GB version is available, along with two other color options: Berry (red) and Fog (green). However, those other options are exclusive to Google's store.
Even though it's classified as a midrange phone, the Pixel 10a certainly doesn't feel like one. Many of its features would feel right at home on a premium model from a few years ago.

The rear camera bar is now completely flush with the back, giving the device a cleaner look and allowing it to sit flat on a desk. Google is also leaning hard on longevity. The company is shipping the phone with Android 16 and promising "seven years of OS, security, and Pixel Drop updates." It's also notably tough, with a 6.3-inch Actua display made out of Gorilla Glass 7i and an IP68 resistance rating. That means the phone is completely protected against dust and can survive brief immersion underwater.
Under the hood, the Pixel 10a runs the same Tensor G4 chipset as the rest of the Pixel 10 lineup, enabling access to AI-powered features like Camera Coach. Other notable features include faster charging, a two-year trial of Satellite SOS, and an improved Quick Share that makes it easier to move files between Androids and compatible iPhones.
How I rated this deal
Per ZDNET's rating system, I give this promotion a perfect score of 5/5, because you can't beat getting a free phone. Google's Pixel 10a launches on Thursday, March 5, and that is when Verizon will ship the smartphone. There is a one-time $40 activation fee. Once you pay that off, the only thing you'll have to pay moving forward is the monthly service plan bill.
