Another Lanterns trailer dropped today during the series Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con and while we know the action of the series take place in a Nebraska small town with recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and mentor legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) dealing with a small murder, we see the action head to space in the massive galaxy that we know.
Also showing up here in the trailer is Sinestro. In the show, Jordan is training Stewart to be the ultimate intergalactic cop.
Surprising everyone at the panel was Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardener. He claimed he didn’t get the email to be at today’s panel. “I”m kind of a big deal at Comic-Con,” he joked, “Firefly,…” as he listed his credits. “I’m legally required to be here!”
Six clips were also shown during the panel, showing how grounded and riveting this series is over the lampoon sensibility of the Marin Campbell-directed, Ryan Reynolds-starring big screen take.
In the first clip, we see Jordan picking up a very obedient Stewart. Jordan asks him if he’s used the ring.
“I haven’t worked the ring yet, I thought the point was the Guardians choose me.” Jordan flips Stewart the ring while driving. “I’ll be at a taco stand down the road, meet me there.” Jordan jumps out of the car while it’s in motion, which flings off a cliff. Stewart grabs the ring activating it, before the car crashes in the canyon below. Moments later, Hal is taking photos gleefully with fans at the taco stand as Stewart arrives, ticked off.
In the second clip, Hal is in the police station, grilling a suspect who he believes is an alien. He’s able to detect that he is an alien, given his stock answers about President Barack Obama and the fact that he doesn’t know what school Harry Potter went to. The alien has a ticking bomb that he’ll set off in his head if he’s not released. Hal, unafraid slams him up against the window. The bomb is set. Hal throws the alien to other side of the room, before activating his ring to create a protective bubble as the alien human ignites.
The third sequence showed Stewart getting an assignment to invade a mansion in the woods while the fourth teased the arrival of Guy Gardner. In the fifth clip, which appeared to be a sequence that took place before the Hal-alien fight scene, Jordan is in a bar and yearns to start a fight with the locals. Stewart knows what’s going on: Hal wants to intentionally start a fight so he can go to jail to talk to the alien that the cops are blocking him from.
In the sixth clip, it’s revealed that Stewart slept with the wife of Garrett Dillahunt’s.
EP Mundy revealed that Laura Linney will be playing one of the senior Guardians on the show, and left it at that without announcing the name of her character.
In the last clip, Hal meets Sinestro in space who is imprisoned. Sinestro wants to know more about Stewart and where Hal found him. “He’s not my trainee, he’s my contingency,” Hal tells Sinestro. “You don’t believe he’s your back-up, do you Hal?” asserts Sinestro.
Cast also includes Kelly MacDonald (who wasn’t present today due to being on set elsewhere), Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Ulrich Thomsen, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Sherman Augustus, J. Alphonse Nicholson, Jason Ritter, Nathan Fillion, Chris Coy, and Paul Ben-Victor.
Series is produced by HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. The Lanterns pilot is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, who are co-creators for the series. Mundy serves as showrunner. The first two episodes are directed by James Hawes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel and Alik Sakharov also tapped to direct. The series is executive produced by Mundy, Lindelof, James Gunn, Peter Safran, King, Ron Schmidt, and Hawes.
Lanterns was shot not only at the Warner lot, but all over the state of California, including Barstow and the Santa Clarita area.
Lanterns premieres on August 16.
