10 Years Later, Crunchyroll's Best Romance Anime Is Finally Complete

From modern hits such as Blue Box, Rent-A-Girlfriend, and Honey Lemon Soda to classics like Fruits Basket and Orange, TMS Entertainment has always had a firm grip on the romance genre. That said, nearly fourteen years later, the studio's most underrated romance release remains Kamisama Kiss. Based on the manga of the same name by Julietta Suzuki, this supernatural romantic comedy is the perfect blend of Inuyasha and Fruits Basket.

And while Julietta Suzuki has since also authored another emerging hit in Otaku Vampire's Love Bite, Kamisama Kiss remains her magnum opus, which has aged like fine wine in the last decade and a half. However, as much of a must-watch the series may be, until most recently, all of Kamisama Kiss wasn't available on streaming, with Crunchyroll missing one very important addition to the anime that's finally been added.

Crunchyroll Finally Has All of Kamisama Kiss And Its OVAs

In addition to the two seasons that aired in 2012 and 2015, Kamisama Kiss' anime also released five OVA episodes, which were originally bundled with the manga's final four volumes and official fanbook. These five OVAs, which were released from 2015 to 2016, adapt the "Past Arc," and essentially serve as the finale to the anime.

They not only wrap up most loose ends but also see the main romance between Nanami and Tomoe to its happy ending. And, at long last, nearly ten whole years after they were first released, these OVA episodes are finally available to stream on Crunchyroll as of July 23.

Given how crucial the story told in these OVAs is, it's a mystery that it's taken this long for them to be added to Crunchyroll. Kamisama Kiss' anime was left hanging with the end of its second season, which roughly adapted up to Volume 11 of the manga.

The manga in its entirety ran for 25 volumes in all, which means a lot was lost between Season 2 and the OVAs, which essentially just tacked the ending onto the series. However, for those looking for any closure to the story, the OVAs are still very much required viewing.

Kamisama Kiss' Anime Needs A Modern Do-Over

All that said, seeing as old classics like Ranma 1/2 and even The Rose of Versailles have gotten modern remakes lately, while anime like Kimi ni Todoke and Kakuriyo: Bed and Breakfast for Spirits were revived with new seasons after years, it might not be completely impossible for Kamisama Kiss to also make such a comeback.

Granted, the original anime still holds up in terms of its style, charm, visuals, and animation. However, the two seasons with the ending tacked on in the form of the OVAs are far from the perfect adaptation. While the OVAs do explain most of the series' biggest mysteries and wrap up many loose ends, a lot of character development for Tomoe, as well as many other supporting characters, is lost in the process, which would arguably make for a great third season.

Kamisama Kiss' story in the manga is truly beautiful, and the series is still very much popular and beloved today as it was fourteen years ago, meaning a modern remake would certainly garner attention. And with TMS Entertainment's gorgeous modern animation as seen in series like Blue Box, a Kamisama Kiss remake could see the series once again take its place as one of the best shojo romances.
