Shia LaBeouf Reflects on His “Dirty, Ugly, Disgusting” Behavior Amid Mardi Gras Battery Charges
Shia LaBeouf is getting candid about his marriage with Mia Goth.
Amid reports that they privately broke up last year, the Holes actor shared insight into why he and the Frankenstein star, who wed in 2016, decided to part ways.
“You got to deal with that and God puts that on your heart for a reason,” Shia, 39, shared on the Feb. 28 episode of Channel 5 with Andrew Callaghan. “And I feel like it’s not new heartbreak. I don’t want to talk too much about it. It’s not my story alone to tell but my side is, you know, I failed my marriage, and so I had to own up to that.”
For him, owning up to that led him to New Orleans.
“So, that’s why I had to move out here,” he said. “So, I moved out here and started trying to rebuild, was having a good time, and then hit a roadblock right there.”
The Transformers star—who shares 3-year-old daughter Isabel with Mia—was referring to a Feb. 17 incident at a Mardi Gras celebration where he was arrested on battery charges.
The New Orleans Police Department confirmed that the Disney alum was taken into custody just after 12 a.m. local time after two victims were “reportedly assaulted.”
Shia—who has been open about his battle with addiction—also shared that he was “drunk” during the brawl, noting how he ended his sobriety nine months prior. Detailing the ups and downs of his sobriety journey, he admitted his longest stretch was “probably two years.”

“I was probably sober for a year before the birth of my daughter into a year of my daughter’s birth,” he explained, “and then life became life.”
“I know there’s people that depended on me and people that look to me to be some kind of sobriety, stability and like some pillar of this s--t,” he added. “I’m just a man.”
While Mia, 32, and Shia—who've been in an on-off relationship since 2012—have kept their relationship highs and lows private, they’ve been open about their love for their little girl.
"She is the most dynamic spark of life and most magical. It's a game-changer," Shia said of their baby on the Real Ones with Jon Bernthal podcast in 2022. "Me and my girl had been in love for a long time, but I didn't really know it. I didn't really know what love was until all this s--t hit the fan and she was still around."

And Mia has been transformed by parenthood, as well.
"It's a really psychedelic experience to have a child," she told Elle in an interview published in October. "You're parenting her, but you're also parenting the version of you that existed when you were that age."
"The amount of love that you can feel," the Pearl actress continued, "she's the greatest gift of my life."
