The story of the upcoming Sense & Sensibility movie has turned a new page.
The upcoming Sense & Sensibility, which adapts the classic Jane Austen novel of the same name, is set to debut on October 16. The project, which was directed by Georgia Oakley (Blue Jean), stars Daisy Edgar-Jones (Twisters) and Esme Creed-Miles (Hanna) as sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, Caitríona Balfe (Outlander) as their mother, and George MacKay (1917), Frank Dillane (Urchin), and Herbert Nordrum (The Worst Person in the World) as the sisters' love interests Edward Ferrars, John Willoughby, and Colonel Brandon.
At CinemaCon, the annual convention for theater exhibitors, Focus Features shared an exclusive trailer for the upcoming movie. While the trailer is not yet available online, the footage showed the two sisters being treated cruelly by their late father's heir, Robert Ferrars (Forrest Bothwell) before being forced to move to a smaller home, where they meet Mrs. Jennings (Fiona Shaw). The trailer then shows the famous rake Willoughby meeting Marianne, followed by a montage of intensely dramatic emotions both between the lovers and between the sisters.
Overall, the trailer that debuted at CinemaCon seems to be very faithful to the events of the original Jane Austen novel. Ultimately, it remains to be seen if this pays off for the project, as the majority of the most popular adaptations of the book have been straightforward period drama adaptations. Most notably, this includes the Oscar-winning 1995 adaptation directed by Ang Lee, which boasted a star-studded cast that included Emma Thompson (who also wrote the screenplay), Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant, Alan Rickman, Imelda Staunton, and Hugh Laurie.
Whereas other Jane Austen novels have had popular modernizations such as Clueless (which adapts Emma) or Bridget Jones's Diary (which adapts Pride & Prejudice), Sense & Sensibility's modernizations, including the 2006 Hilary and Haylie Duff vehicle Material Girls and 2011's From Prada to Nada, have been more under the radar. Meanwhile, the novel has already received a period adaptation in the 2020s with Hallmark's 2024 adaptation starring Deborah Ayorinde and Bethany Antonia.
However, the upcoming Jane Austen movie could still shine thanks to its cast. Daisy Edgar-Jones, for instance, is a BAFTA nominee for her performance opposite Paul Mescal in the 2020 limited series Normal People, which more than proved her mettle in the romance genre. Since then, she has become a major rising star thanks to roles that have allowed her to show off her range in a wide variety of genres, in titles including the horror-comedy Fresh, the crime miniseries Under the Banner of Heaven, and the disaster movie Twisters.
