A brand new film in the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise has leaked online in the latest of many errors that have gone into the film's release. Everything known about The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender suggested the film could be a major new entry in the long-running series, but it now appears that Paramount must change its plans.
As a franchise, Avatar: The Last Airbender has struggled. While Avatar is widely considered one of the best animated shows ever made, the ancillary material has failed to live up to that level of quality. The live-action adaptation is considered among M. Night Shyamalan's worst movies, and The Legend of Korra is often seen as a lesser sequel.
There are other projects in the works. Avatar: Seven Havens is planned for release next year, and there are high hopes for the new series. Even with this in mind, however, there are more reasons to be worried about the future of Avatar.
Following mixed responses to the live-action Netflix adaptation, nothing has lived up to the quality of the original show. Many hoped that the new Aang movie could fix this, setting a new benchmark in the series.
With that said, no matter how good the movie is, it is difficult to find success with a disastrous rollout like Aang has had. The movie leaking online is only the latest in a series of concerning developments. Still, looking into the circumstances does fortunately make it clear that there is still a bright path forward.
The Entire Avatar: Aang, The Last Airbender Movie Leaked Online
In an exceedingly messy move, the entire movie of The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender has leaked online this week. What looks to have happened, according to comments on various platforms, is that the file for the movie was sent out in error, allowing an X user to upload the entire film.
Once something is available online, it is difficult to put the genie back in the bottle. From there, the film has proliferated across sites, garnering thousands of views on TikTok edits, inspiring fan art, and being streamed through illegal video platforms.
With all of this done, there is currently no way to watch the film legally, although many have still been exposed to much of its content. To make sense of this, one must look at the total path that the film went through before being released, including the cancellation of Aang's theatrical plans.
The Avatar Movie Leak Is The Latest In A Series Of Last Airbender Franchise Mistakes
A great deal of Paramount’s rollout for this film has been confusing. The Legend of Aang was originally revealed in 2022 and promised to revisit the original characters from The Last Airbender as adults. Sokka, Toph, Aang, and Katara would all receive updated designs and voices.
Considering much of what has been beloved throughout the run of the series has been familiar faces and ideas, this idea seemed strong. Set before The Legend of Korra, the new film looked like the perfect opportunity to tell continuing stories with the beloved and familiar characters.
A theatrical rollout was planned, but things changed throughout the years of production. From a planned release in October 2025, the film was then pushed back to January 2026 before being ultimately cut from theatrical release earlier this year.
At least the last part of this was likely a move from new leadership after Skydance Media completed its merger with Paramount late last year. However, it was a concerning choice for Avatar fans, who really believed this new movie could have been a major next step in the franchise if given the exposure theatrical exposure.
Following a first look at the Avatar characters on merchandise, to now the entire film being simply leaked online even before a trailer has been released, this whole path for the film has been one disaster after another.
How Paramount Can Get Avatar: Aang, The Last Airbender Back On Track
Credit: NickelodeonOne of the few precedents for what occurred with the new Aang movie is the 2009 film X-Men Origins: Wolverine. More than a month before that film’s theatrical release, a work print of the entire movie leaked online with unfinished effects. Like with Aang, the movie spread quickly across the internet.
Despite this horrendous leak, however, the film was still able to be released in theaters later that year, where it earned a decent $373 million. Wolverine has only grown more popular since, with Hugh Jackman seemingly still playing the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
All of this goes to show that The Legend of Aang is not necessarily dead yet; with a smart and fast pivot, the film could still be released in theaters.
Audiences clearly have shown a great deal of interest in the story, and there remains a large potential audience for it on the big screen. While the official cost of the film has not been revealed, it is estimated to carry a budget of around $80 million.
This kind of spend justifies a theatrical rollout. Even if only a small release, the Avatar franchise deserves an opportunity to live out on the big screen before making a splash on streaming later this year. Especially after the response of artists to the Aang leak, Paramount must do something to make up for this, and fast.
Certainly, if the studio is quick, they could turn this into a decent streaming release that could bolster their numbers in the coming weeks. However, waiting for October at this point would be a mistake, unless they plan on a theatrical release first.
Following the box office success of KPop Demon Hunters after already debuting on Netflix, there is still precedent for Aang to find success in theaters. A release like this would also help to show faith in the brand, which could bolster the success of all of its projects into the future.
While there is this focused attention on the Avatar: The Last Airbender brand, now is the time to strike. Audiences love these familiar characters, and not giving them the time to shine, either on the big screen or on a quick, well-pushed streaming rollout, would be a huge mistake.
