Sega finally did it. Just weeks after announcing a new version of Virtua Fighter 5 for Steam, the company has confirmed that an all-new entry, which appears to be Virtua Fighter 6, is in the works.
Virtua Fighter 6 would be the first new numbered entry in Sega’s fighting game franchise in nearly two decades. But Sega’s only calling its new game a “New Virtua Fighter Project” for now. Hmm! Virtua Fighter 5 first hit arcades in 2006, and has received a number of revisions and re-releases over the past 18 years. The series debuted in 1993 with the arcade version of Virtua Fighter.
Developed by Sega’s Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, Virtua Fighter 6 — or whatever it will be called — will seemingly see the return of series veterans like Akira and Sarah. More details are promised in a VF Direct presentation on Dec. 13.
The new Virtua Fighter is coming in 2025 for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. The game is part of a push from Sega to revive many of its dormant properties. The company is also working on new entries in its Crazy Taxi, Golden Axe, Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, and Streets of Rage franchises.
