Scott Printz, a producer of ABC’s Private Practice and How To Get Away With Murder, Apple TV’s Truth Be Told, and most recently Bookie for HBO/MAX, died on January 23. He was 69.
His death was announced today by his wife, former casting director Shani Ginsberg. A cause and place of death were not immediately available.
Printz began his career as a DGA trainee, segueing into Second and then First Assistant Director positions on films and television series such as Fright Night Part 2, Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead, The Wonder Years, Party of Five and Hitch, among others.
From there, he moved into the role of producer, beginning with Shonda Rhimes’ long running ABC show Private Practice in 2008 (he would produce or co-produce 84 episodes through 2013). He produced or co-produced 87 episodes of How To Get Away With Murder from 2014-2020, and produced nine episodes of the NBC sitcom American Auto (2021-2022), 20 episodes of legal drama Truth Be Told (2021-2023) and 16 episodes of the Nick Backay-Chuck Lorre comedy Bookie.
A member of the DGA and the Television Academy, Printz is remembered by director and frequent collaborator Andy Tennant as “a gentle, confident leader of the pack.” Cinematographer Tim Shurstedt said, “There are only a couple of people I’ve worked with who were as knowledgeable about what all the departments did and what their needs were. Scott was extraordinarily intelligent and unfailingly honest. Production crews trusted and respected him.”
Printz’s longtime agent Janet Carol Norton noted that “Scott will be forever remembered by his colleagues and friends for his collaborative work style, incredible personality and sense of humor.”
In addition to his wife, Printz is survived by sons Arlen and Jesse; Jesse’s partner Christina Lelon; mother Shirley; and siblings Matthew, Kyle and Vicki.
Donations in Printz’s honor can be made to The Nature Conservancy and The Institute for Myeloma and Bone Cancer Research.
