Would Kerry Washington Return for a ‘Scandal’ Reboot? She Says...
Sarah Michelle Gellar won’t be back to fight the forces of darkness after all.
The Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum shared that a planned reboot of the supernatural drama—which was set to debut on Hulu—is no longer in the works at the streaming service.
“I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me,” she said in a video posted on Instagram March 14. “Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy: New Sunnydale.”
Sarah, 48, was set to executive produce the series alongside Oscar winner Chloé Zhao—who also directed the first episode of the unaired sequel series—and she thanked the filmmaker for the opportunity to reprise her iconic role.
“I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy's stylish yet affordable boots,” Sarah continued. “Thanks to Chloé, I was reminded how much I love her, and how much she means not only to me, but to all of you. And this doesn’t change any of that.”
But rest assured, the scream queen’s reverence for Buffy Summers remains as strong as ever.
“I promise,” she said in closing, quoting one of the character’s most memorable lines, “if the apocalypse actually comes, you can still beep me.”
Shortly after E! News learned about the planned continuation of the original series—which aired from 1997 to 2003—Sarah shared her desire to “do it justice,” given that it had been over two decades since she had portrayed the teen demon hunter.

“Goodness knows there’s big shoes to fill—my own,” she told E! News in February 2025. “Which is kind of weird. I should fit in them.”
And while Sarah made no secret of her hesitation to revisit her signature character, she believed the would-be revival finally felt like an idea worth exploring.
“I have always listened to the fans and heard your desire to revisit ‘Buffy’ and her world, but it was not something I could do unless I was sure we would get it right,” she wrote on Instagram at the time. “I promise you, we will only make this show if we know we can do it right. And I will tell you that we are on the path there.”
