Sadie Sink Addresses MCU Return Potential After Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the fourth installment in Tom Holland's Spider-Man saga is set to feature an array of familiar faces from the MCU, including Zendaya as MJ, Jacob Batalon as Ned, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, and Jon Bernthal as the Punisher. Spider-Man: Brand New Day also serves as Sink's MCU debut in a mysterious new role that has been the source of much speculation online.

In an interview with ScreenRant's Liam Crowley, Sink is asked whether Spider-Man: Brand New Day marks the start of a years-long tenure in the MCU. "We'll have to see, I guess," she says. "I don't know."

Sink's comment is in keeping with the larger aura of mystery surrounding her role in the film. Who exactly the Stranger Things star is playing has been shrouded in mystery for months, but one popular theory is that she is playing Jean Grey, a member of the X-Men.

If true, the introduction of Sink as Grey marks a significant moment for the MCU. It's been known for a while now that the franchise is gradually working toward the introduction of the X-Men. Once the Multiverse Saga concludes with Avengers: Secret Wars, which is scheduled to release in December 2027, the next phase will be the Mutant Saga.

The upcoming Avengers: Doomsday is slated to be a major step forward in this regard, with multiple Fox X-Men characters confirmed to return, including Patrick Stewart's Professor X, Ian McKellen's Magneto, James Marsden's Cyclops, Rebecca Romijn's Mystique, Kelsey Grammer's Beast, and Alan Cumming's Nightcrawler. These anticipated returns follow Hugh Jackman's comeback as Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine (2024).

Sink, however, if she is playing Jean, marks the MCU's first major recast of a central X-Men character. Jean has previously been played by Famke Jansen and Sophie Turner, but none of the X-Men films with these two actors were actually part of the MCU.

If Brand New Day is Jean's MCU introduction, it's possible she'll return to play some kind of role in Doomsday or Secret Wars, and potentially in the Mutant Saga that follows. As an Omega-level mutant with telekinesis, Jean represents a very powerful being, and someone who could end up being key to future movies.

Whether Sink is Jean or not, the film marks a promising entry point for the actor into the MCU. Spider-Man: Brand New Day reviews have been generally very positive from critics, and the film has an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, as of writing. It's also sure to be a box office hit. With the film only days away from hitting theaters, it won't be long until Sink's role is officially unveiled and her MCU future becomes more clear.
