EXCLUSIVE: Saban Films has acquired U.S. rights for Canadian director Houston Bone’s horror Son of Sara: Volume 1 about a troubled pregnant woman who accepts an invite to a dinner party which degenerates into a bloody and demented nightmare.
New York-based Visit Films sealed the deal and will be continuing sales on the title at European Film Market next month.
Chloe Van Landschoot (Lune, From) stars alongside Tymika Tafari (Settle Down), Garrett Hnatiuk (Father’s Day), and Jane Moffat (Fahrenheit 451).
The picture opened the Blood in the Snow Festival in Toronto in November 2025, where Van Landschoot won the festival’s award for Best Lead Performance in a Feature Film.
Bone first drew acclaim for writing, directing, and editing the Canadian Screen Award-nominated web series Teenagers, which has since been viewed more than 20 million times on YouTube. The series ran for three seasons, from 2014-2017.
His feature film directorial debut, I Don’t Know Who You Are world premiered at TIFF in 2023; and was released theatrically in North America in 2024. In between times, his short films Ghost (2020) and Spaghetti (2023) also enjoyed success on the film festival circuit.
Commenting on the film’s sale to Saban Films, Houston Bone said, “After gagging Toronto at Blood in the Snow this past winter, we are excited to be working with Saban to bring our grisly horror movie, and our new little monster, to audiences across the United States.”
“This film has been a passion project for all of us since we shot it back in October 2023. Real blood, sweat, and tears went into bringing Son of Sara: Volume 1 to the screen. We are humbled and thrilled by the response from film festival audiences so far. It is a dream come true to be sharing this film at this scale internationally.”
Son of Sara: Volume 1 is produced by Martine Brouillet under Bone’s Black Elephant Productions banner. The film was financed privately by Grisly Productions LLC and received financial support from Telefilm Canada.
