Ryan Reynolds and Andrew Garfield regret doing this for the bit.
Reflecting on their viral moment from the 2017 Golden Globes, the actors shared why they regret kissing each other as Ryan Gosling—who bested Reynolds in the Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy category that year—accepted his award.
“Last time I saw you was the Golden Globes,” Reynolds explained in the actors’ conversation for Variety’s “Actors on Actors” series. “Garfield is sitting beside me and goes, ‘Hey, if they call your name and you win, don’t kiss your wife, just kiss me.’”
Reynolds—who shares kids James, 9, Inez, 8, Betty, 5, and Olin, born in 2023, with Blake Lively—also joked that the La La Land star shouldn’t have won the category.
“Gosling did not deserve it,” he continued, before clarifying, “I’m actually a nutty fan of his. He of course won for La La Land, as he should. I loved that we were just sitting there and were like, ‘Eh, let’s do it anyways.’”
Indeed, in wide footage from the moment Gosling takes the stage to accept his award, Reynolds and Garfield are kissing at their table, while Blake laughs along.
“I’m glad you were game for that,” Garfield noted. “I also retrospectively felt a little bit insensitive.”
To which Reynolds chimed in, “I did too.”
The actors expressed gratitude that their silly moment didn’t totally outshine Gosling’s win—his first and only at the Golden Globes amid six nominations.
“We were lucky that it was such a wide shot,” Reynolds noted as Garfield interjected in agreement, “That nobody noticed, until later.”
Garfield said he later apologized to Gosling for stealing some of his thunder, while Reynolds joked, “I actually just egged his house—which is super childish to do but I didn’t feel so great about losing.”

And while Gosling didn’t react too strongly to the moment at the time, only using the evening to thank his “sweetheart” Eva Mendes in his acceptance speech, his La La Land costar Emma Stone—who now shares daughter Louise with Dave McCary but dated Garfield in the 2010s—shared her reaction about the kiss after the ceremony.
“They did not kiss each other,” Emma told Entertainment Tonight after being shown footage. “That’s hilarious.”
