After the summer of streaming ended, Netflix's momentum didn't falter, with September packed with must-watch new and returning shows on the streamer. The Gentlemen, Guy Ritchie's television spin-off of his 2019 film of the same name, returned to the top of the streaming charts, albeit with a drop in viewership; fans of cozy romance got their latest must-watch fix courtesy of the recently renewed Crew Girl; and Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 returned for a second season.

But no series has quite caught the eye of Netflix subscribers this month like Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, the latest from the prolific Ryan Murphy's true crime anthology series, which is just one of many hugely popular branches in the lovingly named "Murphyverse." Young Ella Beatty, the daughter of Annette Bening and Warren Beatty, took on the central role of the first female in the Monster anthology and is joined by the likes of Vicky Krieps as Bridget Sullivan, Rebecca Hall as Abby Borden, Charlie Hunnam as Andrew Borden, and more.

This tale of debauchery and murder is certainly indulgent and is, unsurprisingly, the most-watched show on Netflix in the U.S. and the world, considering the huge success of the previous installments. But just how successful has The Lizzie Borden Story been? Well, it seems on par with most of the franchise so far, with new data confirming the series has earned 12.2 million views on Netflix in its first four days. This is the same result as The Ed Gein Story, and just 0.1 million fewer than 2024's The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. However, none have come close to the 196.2 million hours watched (22.3 million views) of 2022's The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

What Have Critics Said About 'Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story'?

It is entirely unsurprising to learn that the latest Murphy series has proven controversial. Once again, critics have slammed his supposed exploitation of harrowing true cases for cheap entertainment, leaving the series with a poor 40% score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The series was called "campy, frustrating" and "occasionally moving" in Gabrielle Moss' review for Collider. "While it wishes it were a complex Thelma & Louise-style statement about women, abuse, and revenge," Moss wrote, "it doesn't trust the audience enough and instead gives us a cross between a lecture and a fairy tale."
