Ryan Gosling‘s press junket for “Project Hail Mary” took a wildly unexpected turn after reporter Jake Hamilton was forced to interview the Oscar nominee on video while stranded on the side of the road. Hamilton, who publishes video interviews on his “Jake’s Takes” YouTube page, was on his way back from the Grand Canyon in order to attend the press junket when his bus broke down and forced him to miss the Gosling interview in person.
“Are you in a volcano?” Gosling asked when he discovered Hamilton was conducting the interview while outside in rocky terrain. “You look like Tom Cruise in ‘Mission Impossible,’ the one where he’s climbing!… This is amazing. I don’t want you to be stranded, but the production value on this… Do you technically need a permit to shoot there? It’s like you’re doing a Western!”
Hamilton tried to redirect the interview back to “Project Hail Mary,” but Gosling could not shake the absurdity of what was going on and asked: “Do you have help on the way?”
“It’s going to be about an hour,” Hamilton informed Gosling about how much longer he’d be stranded while flipping the camera around to show the broken down bus on the side of the road and other passengers waiting around for help. “So, I don’t know how long you got to talk to me, but I’ve got about an hour.”
“Hold on, let’s just… First things first, do you have water? Are you staying hydrated?” Gosling asked, to which Hamilton said that he did have water. “You sure? You’re sure you have enough water for everyone? Because that could get ugly… I am worried about your hydration. You got a power bar?”
Based on the 2021 novel by Andy Weir, “Project Hail Mary” stars Gosling as school teacher Ryland Grace, who wakes up alone on a spaceship light-years away from Earth with no recollection of how he got there. As his memory recovers, he pieces together an outlandish plot that sent him through the galaxy to stop a mysterious entity from blacking out the sun. The film is directed by Chris Miller and Phil Lord and co-stars Sandra Hüller.
“I definitely want to hear that you got out of this,” Gosling told Hamilton when their interview came to an end. Watch the full encounter in the video below.
