Sherlock Holmes is on the case yet again.

There are quite a few famous detectives in movie history. Kenneth Branagh has brought Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot to life in three movies so far, with Daniel Craig commanding theaters and Netflix screens with his performance as the more recently created, charismatic detective Benoit Blanc from Rian Johnson's Knives Out franchise. However, no one comes close to Sherlock Holmes' status.

The greatest detective in fiction has been the topic of several movies and TV shows. Some of the most popular include Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock on the BBC and Robert Downey Jr.'s two Sherlock Holmes movies directed by Guy Ritchie. While a third Sherlock Holmes movie has yet to happen, Ritchie has returned with a new Sherlock project, and it boosted Downey's franchise.

According to FlixPatrol, RDJ's Sherlock Holmes is currently the 10th most-watched movie on Prime Video in the United States. The film was the first entry in Downey's detective franchise, arriving in theaters on December 25, 2009. Sherlock Holmes joins another movie directed by Guy Ritchie on Prime Video's chart, the spy thriller Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre. The Bluff leads the list.

Sherlock Holmes grossed $524 million worldwide, marking a solid start to Downey's version of the famous detective. A sequel soon followed, with Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows arriving on December 16, 2011. It went on to gross $543.8 million. 2009's Sherlock Holmes was met with a positive reception from critics, standing at a solid 70% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Due to the success of the franchise, fans have been waiting over a decade for Sherlock Holmes 3 to be made. Since the second film in the franchise was released, updates on the status of the trilogy finale have come and gone over the years. That said, on October 2, 2025, Susan Downey addressed the situation to Collider, saying, "I would love to bring a third Sherlock to the world."

Today (March 4), all eight episodes of Young Sherlock season 1 were released on Prime Video. The new mystery series focuses on a 19-year-old version of Sherlock Holmes, played by Hero Fiennes Tiffin. It is very different from Downey's.

Guy Ritchie serves as director and executive producer on Young Sherlock. The arrival of the new Sherlock Holmes series likely boosted Robert Downey Jr.'s first movie as the detective, allowing it to make its way into Prime Video's Top Ten Movies chart in the United States. Now, mystery fans must wait for news on Young Sherlock season 2 and whether Downey's Sherlock Holmes will ever return.
