Ridley Scott's New Alien Movie Can Finally Answer Prometheus & Covenant Mysteries, Fixing The Franchise's Canon

1 week ago 6

Ridley Scott has announced that he’s working on a new Alien movie, and it can finally fix the franchise’s canon by answering the unanswered questions from Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. Scott’s unfinished Alien prequel trilogy left a bunch of lingering mysteries. Why did David kill all the Engineers? When did David kill Shaw? What’s David’s plans for the facehugger embryos? It always felt like there was at least one more movie needed to connect David creating an army of xenomorphs to Weyland-Yutani assigning Ash to bring a xenomorph back to Earth at the expense of his crewmates.

While Alien: Romulus acknowledged the canonical changes of the prequels by including Prometheus’ black goo and making the Offspring look like a mutated Engineer, it didn’t really answer any of the prequels’ questions. 20th Century Studios is developing a direct sequel to Alien: Romulus that will continue the story of Rain and Andy, but Scott is simultaneously developing his own new Alien film separate from that. After Romulus teased the mysteries of Prometheus and Covenant, Scott’s movie can address those mysteries head-on and finally clear up the confusion they caused.

Ridley Scott Making A New Alien Movie Means Those Prometheus & Covenant Mysteries Can Finally Be Solved

Scott Can Bring Back David & His Unanswered Questions

After the box office disappointment of Alien: Covenant, the third and final chapter in Scott’s Alien prequel trilogy was called off. While it was exciting that the series continued with Alien: Romulus, which proved to be a return to form, the fact that Scott’s prequel story would remain incomplete — just when it was getting exciting — was a massive let-down. Now, Scott will finally get the chance to finish that story with a new Alien film. Scott’s third Alien prequel can be the perfect middle ground between the contemplative sci-fi of Prometheus and the intense haunted-house horror of Covenant.

Prometheus Was Always An Underrated Alien Movie & I'm Delighted It's Finally Getting Its Due

Prometheus has always been one of the Alien franchise's most underrated entries, and I'm glad it's finally getting the appreciation it deserves.

Scott’s new Alien movie can show what David was planning to do with Daniels, Tennessee, and the facehugger embyros. It seems likely that he was planning to put the facehuggers on them and birth a couple of xenomorphs, but then what? Maybe he was planning to conduct further experiments on the xenomorphs themselves to see what makes them tick and try to replicate their perfect biology. He was likely plotting the same experiments that failed on the Renaissance station and gave Rain and Andy the worst day of their lives in Romulus. Now, Scott can finally make that happen.

How Ridley Scott's New Alien Movie Connects To Other Upcoming Alien Projects

Scott's Film Could Tie To Alien: Earth Or The New Alien Vs. Predator Movie

Scott hasn’t revealed any details about his new Alien movie, but it’s possible that it could connect to other upcoming projects in the Alien universe. While Alien: Romulus was the brainchild of director Fede Álvarez, Scott has been heavily involved in the upcoming Alien: Earth series for FX. Alien: Earth takes place three decades before the events of the original Alien movie, around the same time as Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. Scott’s new Alien film could be a sequel of sorts to the highly anticipated TV series, bringing the characters of both stories together.

Ridley Scott is co-executive-producing Alien: Earth with Fargo creator Noah Hawley.

20th Century Studios president Steve Asbell recently teased a new Alien vs. Predator crossover movie that wouldn’t be anything like the previous AvP films. Asbell promised that any future AvP movie wouldn’t be a standalone, non-canonical entry, but would instead tie in with the existing characters and storylines. Alien: Covenant left David preparing to experiment with the survivors and a pair of facehugger eggs. Perhaps his experiments could lead him to the Predators’ planet and he’ll bring them into the official Alien mythology. That’s just one of many possibilities for where David’s story could go next.

Alien Canon Really Needs Fixing After The Last 3 Movies Destroyed It

The Alien Canon Has Not Been Consistent For A While

An Engineer holds a mysterious substance while standing at the beach in Prometheus

The Alien franchise’s canon has never been 100% consistent, but ever since Prometheus came along with its xenomorph origin story, it’s really gone off the rails. The xenomorph itself has evolved from being a single, naturally formed entity with a short lifespan to a massive, thriving colony with familial love and a long lifespan to a genetically engineered monstrosity grown in a lab. The Alien franchise has changed what the alien is from movie to movie. Alien: Romulus tries to collate all these different ideas, but the mythology is still a mess.

Prometheus’ Engineers were based on Alien’s “Space Jockey” character, but they look totally different. The Network has been changed from a collection of isolated beacons to a universal communication thoroughfare. Prometheus seemingly introduced faster-than-light travel, which wasn’t possible in Alien. Ridley Scott’s new Alien movie really needs to clean up the canon.
