Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Spartacus: House of Ashur's season 1 finale! Will Spartacus: House of Ashur include more familiar faces in the future?
Series creator Steven S. DeKnight has teased whether original Spartacus characters could return in the future of Spartacus: House of Ashur. The alternate universe spinoff features Nick E. Tarabay returning to his role as Ashur. Other familiar characters from the original show include Julius Caesar, and a brief appearance by Lucretia, with Lucy Lawless returning to the role.
In an interview with ScreenRant's Tatiana Hullender for the season 1 finale, DeKnight teased whether more familiar characters from the original show could appear in Spartacus: House of Ashur. While the show's creator doesn't give away too many of his future plans, he does tease the possibility of either Pompey or Crassus returning:
ScreenRant: Speaking of Caesar passing, he was our main character connection to the previous series aside from Ashur himself. Are you thinking about adding more characters from that original show back in, or are you having Ashur stand more on his own?
Steven S. DeKnight: You want me to reveal all the secrets! [Laughs] I can't say anything, but there's another connection hanging out there. Pompey, who we did actually see at the end of the original series, is on the run. Crassus keeps being mentioned, and people are always asking me, "Are we going to see Crassus?" Then I remind them that, in the original series, you heard about Crassus for three seasons before he popped up. So, there's always the opportunity to do that, but my main focus right now is on these new characters.
While the premise of the spinoff sees Ashur transported to an alternate timeline where Spartacus was killed on Mount Vesuvius, House of Ashur's characters have mostly been new faces. Aside from Tarabay's Ashur and Caesar, played here by Jackson Gallagher instead of Todd Lasance, there haven't been any constantly-appearing major original characters. But that might not be the case forever.
As DeKnight notes, there are plenty of ways familiar faces could show up in future episodes of the show. While Spartacus: House of Ashur ended with Caesar's death, it opens the door for more familiar characters returning. This includes Pompey, whom Joel Tobeck played in a cameo appearance in the original show before appearing in multiple episodes of the spinoff.
Currently, Spartacus: House of Ashur season 2 has not been officially greenlit by Starz, despite season 1 ending on February 6. However, DeKnight previously confirmed that the scripts for the follow-up had already been written, indicating any immediate, future cameos have already been planned out. The extent of them, however, remains to be seen until the series returns.
If returning characters do arrive, there's no guarantee they'll be played by the same actors, though. The series could recast some characters, such as Caesar, in order to accommodate for the amount of time that's passed. However, it's clear from Tobeck's return that some familiar actors could come back into their roles from the original show.
For now, it seems like DeKnight will be keeping his exact plans close to his chest. There's no guarantee that the show will reveal any returns. However, with Spartacus: House of Ashur anticipated to run for multiple seasons, there's a high chance more well-known faces will return in the foreseeable future.
