“Red One,” Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans‘ new holiday-themed action comedy, is coming to Prime Video just in time for Christmas.
Though it’s still playing in theaters, “Red One” will be available on the streaming platform starting on Dec. 12. Directed by Jake Kasdan (“Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle”), the film stars Johnson as the head of North Pole security and Evans as a notorious hacker and bounty hunter. When Santa Claus (played by J.K. Simmons) is kidnapped, the two must team up “in a globe-trotting, action-packed mission to save Christmas,” according to the film’s synopsis.
“Red One” also stars Lucy Liu, Kiernan Shipka, Bonnie Hunt, Kristofer Hivju, Nick Kroll and Wesley Kimmel. The Amazon MGM film has grossed $164 million at the worldwide box office so far after originally being set as a streaming-only release.
The film has garnered mainly negative reviews, with Variety‘s Owen Gleiberman writing that the film gives Christmas a “backstory it didn’t need.” It’s “at once an action movie; a kidnap-rescue thriller in which the doors to supply closets in toy stores are mystic portals; and an exercise in Christmas world-building, as if that’s the thing that’s been missing from Christmas,” he wrote.
However, those who have been seeing it in theaters seem to be enjoying the movie, as it has a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter. With plenty of families searching for new festive movies to watch over the holiday season, “Red One’s” arrival on Prime Video could give the film a jolly good streaming boost.
