Both Rebecca Ferguson and Chris Pratt are reeling from the underperformance of their latest film, Mercy. Over the years, Ferguson and Pratt have established themselves as fan-favorite stars, balancing numerous high-profile projects simultaneously. Ferguson, for instance, is set to reprise her enigmatic role in Denis Villeneuve's upcoming Dune: Part Three, and as the lead in the third season of the Apple TV sci-fi show Silo. She has also played memorable roles in the Mission: Impossible movies and has been a part of cult hits such as Doctor Sleep and Life. The critical and commercial underperformance of Mercy is a blow, but the film's mediocre box office revenue so far has helped Ferguson make progress on the list of the highest-grossing stars in history.
She's on the verge of breaking into the top 200 and is currently ranked 208 on the all-time list, topped by Zoe Saldaña. Ferguson is trailing Elijah Wood, Eddie Redmayne, Kurt Russell, Zach Galifianakis, and Jesse Eisenberg. However, she has now overtaken Helena Bonham Carter, whose box office standing has been greatly influenced by her participation in the blockbuster Harry Potter series. She played the villainous Bellatrix Lestrange in the fantasy franchise, which has grossed over $8 billion worldwide. Bonham Carter appeared in the murder mystery limited series Seven Dials, which debuted on Netflix recently.
'Mercy' Has Only Grossed a Third of its Reported Budget So Far
In Mercy, Ferguson plays an AI judge, while Pratt plays a police officer who must prove his innocence after being accused of his wife's murder. Directed by Timur Bekmambetov, Mercy has a 23% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, whose consensus reads, "Constricting its two stars inside an airless presentation of a clunky techno-thriller premise, Mercy is tedious enough to make you cry uncle." However, the film's 82% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes suggests that it might do well once it lands on the PVOD market. Ferguson's fans can wait for her to return as Lady Jessica in Dune: Part Three, which is set to clash with Avengers: Doomsday at the box office in December.
You can watch Mercy in theaters, and Seven Dials on Netflix. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
