RDR2: How To Solve Chick's Treasure Map

Treasure maps in Red Dead Redemption 2 are sketches of landmarks throughout the map that lead Arthur to treasure. Some of these treasure maps can be hard to find when all the rocks and trees blur together. Chapter 2 features a treasure map Arthur loots off Chick Matthews, who owes money to the gang.

Chick's treasure map is one of the first treasure maps you'll come across in RDR2's story mode. It's designed to ease players into deciphering future treasure maps, but it lacks a precise map marker and has a time limit. This means you can permanently fail this mission if you don't find the treasure quickly enough.

Where To Find Chick's Treasure Map

Hunting Down The Fleeing Ranch Hand

Chick Matthews appears in the Chapter 2 quest, "Money Lending and Other Sins," when Leopold Strauss sends Arthur out to collect a debt from the ranch hand. Chick can be found on Guthrie Ranch, just south of the Heartland Overflow in the Heartlands. When you arrive at Guthrie Ranch and ask around for Chick, you'll find him attempting to flee on his horse.

Six different Gang Hideouts can all be found in different locations in Red Dead Redemption 2, with a bonus seventh camp also available to track down.

Simply chase Chick down and lasso him, and he'll tell you he hid his money in a tree. Loot him, and you'll collect Chick's treasure map.

Since you can fail this mission by waiting around too long, make sure you head out to the location of Chick Matthews' treasure quickly. After all, it's not too far away. Hop on one of the best horses in RDR2 as soon as possible and collect Chick's debt to the gang.

Locating The Money Tree

Chick's treasure map depicts the tree hollow Chick mentioned when you hogtied him, but actually finding that tree can be incredibly difficult for some. Luckily, it is just northeast of Guthrie Farm, between the Heartland Overflow and Moonstone Pond. You can find the exact spot on the map shown above.

When you get there, there will be a large tree resembling the one depicted in the treasure map. Walk around it until you find the side with the small hole. Chick's payment is stashed inside the hole. Once you have that in hand, you can move on and collect the other debts in "Money Lending and Other Sins." Now that you understand how Red Dead Redemption 2's treasure maps work, you should find more treasure in no time.

What They Do & Are They Worth It

To complete your treasure location looting, you can find a total of 6 Treasure Maps throughout the game. They each have multiple steps and some can only be completed at certain times. This includes during the Epilogue, as the Elemental Trail map is only available then. If you miss one, it likely will not be that much of an issue, but the best one does present you with some fairly good loot.

The Torn Treasure Maps, which in YouTuber South’s video are separated into the Annesburg Sketches and the Otis Miller Treasure, will get you some unique loot. Most of the other Treasure Maps will net you a number of gold bars, which is no mean thing, but this one comes with something more. Along the way, you can get a Rare Shotgun from the Manito Glade Hermit, and after you finish the quest you will also get Otis’ Revolver. You will also get a few things you likely don’t want, but the weapons are worth it.

All map names and the eventual rewards have been listed in the table below, so you do not have to wonder if you would find it worth it or not.
