Ranking the Viral Cameras of 2026

From Kodak's Charmera to the strange-but-interesting screenless Escura InstantSnap digital camera, 2026 is shaping up to be the year for some wild, hot takes on what makes a camera these days.

Photographer and YouTuber Adam Harig of FoxTailWhipz takes a look at some of the aforementioned viral cameras that have come through his hands in the last couple of years and conveniently ranks them to help you decide whether it's worth spending your hard-earned money on these cameras.

While there are some legit attempts at viral cameras on there, such as the Kodak and the Escura, along with the Paper Shoot Camera (which is apparently made from biodegradable "stone paper") to the (also screen-free) Camp Snap cameras, there are some other takes on the trend, notably where Harig highlights used compact cameras, compact camera revivals and older DSLRs as options to get the viral feel while actually getting usable photos from something with more than two megapixels.

But, beyond his ranking of cameras, I'm glad to see that he called out something that I think is a scourge on the camera industry: The Amazon "scameras" and "scamcorders." In 2023, I bought one of these to put through its paces for an article on this very site, and a teardown of that camera brought to light the same conclusion that Harig draws in his video: there are a whole lot of companies out there shoving webcams into cheap plastic bodies, making up a bunch of fancy sounding specifications on an Amazon page, and scamming people into buying what is essentially e-waste junk.

Not quite a scam but still scammy-feeling is when he points out one manufacturer that basically fired up the production line on a ten-year-old point-and-shoot camera to sell it brand new without any significant changes for hundreds of dollars. At that point, it's probably better to hit the used market.

Check out the video above to see all of Harig's recommendations and where he ranked these viral cameras. And if you think there's a viral camera that didn't make his list that should have, leave it in the comments below. It might be time for me to try out some terrible cameras again, in the name of science, of course.
