Right now, audiences are flocking to cinemas around the globe to catch Ralph Fiennes as they’ve never seen him before in Nia DaCosta’s 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. From Schindler’s List to the Harry Potter franchise, the actor has taken on an array of vastly different roles during his lengthy career, with each one showcasing his impressive genre-crossing skills. The performer has certainly embraced his villainous side, but his work in Edward Berger’s 2024 religious thriller, Conclave, is not only a standout performance, but puts him in the shoes of an incredibly unique character. With numerous awards under its belt, including eight nominations and one win at the Oscars, it would be a shame for fans of Fiennes to not see the fast-paced picture when it arrives on Peacock on February 13.
Filled with plenty of twists and turns, Conclave throws audiences into the middle of a tense time within the Catholic Church after the pope dies from a heart attack. The College of Cardinals descends on the Vatican in hopes of electing a new leader, with Fiennes’ Thomas Lawrence leading the discussions. Over the course of the film, secrets rise that threaten to push the voting process off course, and one man rises to claim the title of the church’s most revered figure. In addition to Fiennes, Conclave also features career-defining performances from Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, Lucian Msamati, and Carlos Diehz.
A colossal box office hit for Focus Features, Conclave earned a whopping $128 million against its $20 million production budget by the time it left cinemas. On Rotten Tomatoes, the project holds a 93% critics’ score against an 86% audience rating, reflecting that the general consensus for the movie was an incredibly positive one. As mentioned, the film was one of the most notable titles during that year’s awards circuit, raking in nominations left and right at events including the BAFTAs, Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and Academy Awards.
Edward Berger’s Back-to-Back Success
First stepping onto the scene with his feature-length directorial debut, Jack, in 2014, Berger struck gold with back-to-back projects thanks to 2022’s All Quiet on the Western Front and 2024’s Conclave. The former, which is based on Erich Maria Remarque’s 1929 anti-war novel of the same name, was a standout favorite on the awards circuit, including the Oscars, where it nabbed nine nominations and took home four wins. Like his religious thriller that followed, Berger’s All Quiet on the Western Front is an incredibly memorable cinematic experience that sticks with you long after the credits roll.
Head over to Peacock on February 13 to stream Conclave.
