Carina Birrell (BBC Three: Lip Service), James Cosmo (Game of Thrones), and Tony Curran (BBC: Mayflies) have signed on to the indie Scottish feature Raindance, directed by Edinburgh-born filmmaker Natalie Sutherland (ABC: In An Instant).

Sutherland will direct, write, produce, and star in the film, which she has described as her “love letter to Scotland.” The production features an all-Scottish principal cast and is set to film across Scotland.

Raindance follows Fiona and Caitlyn Campbell, who have endured a tumultuous and traumatic life as children. Hailing from Fife, Scotland, they have become estranged, one now living in America, and one remaining in Fife.

The sudden death of their troubled mother brings Fiona back from California to her small Scottish hometown and to her younger sister in order to jointly handle their mother’s death. However, due to specific requests made by their deceased mother and laid out in the Will, the two sisters must embark upon a fraught and unexpected road trip traveling together across Scotland, completing the task of spreading their mother’s ashes at designated spots in order to receive their inheritance. What begins as a “quick job to finish” becomes a journey of reconciliation, returning to their roots, confronting the past, and finding forgiveness.

Raindance is a tribute to Scotland and to the healing power of restoring the magic of childhood belief, curiosity, wonder and awe, and the innate identity which gradually fades into the distance as we grow up and grow apart,” Sutherland said in a statement.

Producing alongside Sutherland are Carina Birrell and Amy Williams.
