Radio star Michael 'Wippa' Wipfli rushed to hospital after he suffers horrific wound in DIY accident

Michael 'Wippa' Wipfli was rushed to hospital on Tuesday afternoon after he severed a tendon in his thumb following a horrific DIY accident.

The Nova broadcaster, 46, was helping co-host Kate Ritchie make a costume for her daughter, Mae, for Book Week when he sliced open his thumb.

He was promptly rushed to hospital for emergency surgery, with the radio star now beginning months of rehab to ensure there is no permanent damage. 

'We needed a cut in the end of a bit of dowel or like the end of a broom, so that we could stick some foam in to make a spear,' Wippa told listeners this week.

'So I took to the task, I'm not afraid of the tools, but all of a sudden when Kate started filming, I think I thought I better put on a show here.

'That's where I chopped through the skin and through the tendon on my thumb.'

Wippa says his colleagues acted quickly to get him medical help, getting him to hospital in an Uber so he could be prepped for surgery. 

'They had to trim the ends of the broken tendon and stitch them back together,' he said.

'So now I've got three months of hand rehab and thumb rehab starts tomorrow. 

'I just have to be gentle for the first three months in terms of too much movement, but it's bandaged up pretty heavy.

'So obviously, there's a few people asking questions and at the moment I'm just running with "shark attack".'

Wippa was back on air by Thursday afternoon for the drive shift, where he went on to tell co-stars Kate and Ryan 'Fitzy' Fitzgerald that 'Book Week is just the worst'.  

'Book Week is just the worst. Like, I understand that it's to motivate kids to read books and, go and grab an outfit and off you go, but there's more to it,' he said.

'It's become competitive. That's where I got carried away.'

Wippa also later shared a video and photos from hospital online. 

In the carousel, he could be seen lying in a hospital bed with his hand tightly bandaged. 

He then went on to take a video of his hospital outfit, showing off the 'chic' medical gown and compression socks he had to wear.

'Just thought I'd do a quick get ready with me for hand surgery,' he joked.

'I love this gown, it's very medical chic, which is beautiful. The tone of it. It connects and hangs off my shoulder, makes it look really soft.' 

Wippa has three children of his own – sons Theodore, nine, Jack, eight, and daughter Francesca, four – who he shares with wife Lisa Wipfli.
