Warning! This post contains a preview for The Punisher #1

Frank Castle's Punisher has survived mob bosses, supervillains, and entire criminal empires. However, the newest threat facing Frank may be harder to take out in his new Marvel series.

As seen in the first preview for Marvel’s new Punisher series from Benjamin Percy, José Luis Soares Pinto, Oren Junior, and Frank D’Armata, it's being teased that Punisher will be struggling with a major obstacle in his brutal crusade against criminals: his own mortality.

The Punisher's Newest Threat Isn't One He Can Just Shoot

In the recently concluded Punisher: Red Band miniseries (also from Percy), Kingpin implanted a chip in The Punisher's head to suppress his will and memories. However, Castle ultimately carved the device out of his head, while also pitting Kingpin and Tombstone against each other in a massive blaze of glory and hail of gunfire.

That being said, it's now being teased that Frank's self-surgery may have created unintended consequences (like some serious brain damage).

In the new preview for this week's The Punisher #1, Frank is shown collapsing in the street after scaring off a mugger, clutching his head in visible pain and agony. Likewise, the issue's narration places some heavy emphasis on Frank's mortality and lack of superpowers compared to other Marvel heroes.

After all, The Punisher doesn't have an adamantium skeleton, super soldier serum, or a rapid healing factor. He’s just a man with a heck of a lot of guns and ammo.

One has to wonder if this new series is setting up a dynamic new story where Frank may have to reckon with his mortality in a whole new way. Of course, The Punisher's never been afraid to die for the sake of his violent mission, but slowly dying with debilitating and perhaps permanent brain damage is a whole different kind of circumstance he likely won't be as prepared to face.

At any rate, it's going to be fascinating to see what's fully going on with Frank Castle when Marvel's new Punisher series kicks off later this week (which is also confirmed to feature the return of the classic Punisher villain Jigsaw!)

The Punisher #1 releases February 25th from Marvel Comics.
