Ben Brosofsky has been writing for Screen Rant since 2022 and editing since 2024. He graduated from Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor's in Cinema & Media Arts. Writing serves as a much-needed distraction from tackling a backlog of Steam games that will never be surmounted.

Project Hail Mary has won plenty of hearts this year, and fans are getting a chance to return to Ryland Grace's adventure in the near future. While there's no full-fledged sequel on the horizon right now (which is probably for the best), author Andy Weir is delivering an additional story aboard the titular spacecraft.

Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars was announced in April only a few weeks after the theatrical release of the film. The new story will come in the form of a virtual reality and mixed-reality experience, and a new trailer shows off more of what to expect.

Project Hail Mary Journey Among the Stars

The official YouTube channel of Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars developer Maze Theory shared a Ship Reveal trailer today, offering a look inside the virtual Hail Mary environment. The trailer offers close-up looks at some individual assets inside the ship, like information display panels and the taumeoba farm that Grace eventually sets up, along with in-game footage of a player actually interacting with that environment in first-person.

It all looks pretty authentic to the film, although it might come with some compromises. Nothing in the trailer suggests that the control panels will actually be anything more than static displays, for example, although there's always a chance that the player might end up interacting with a few. Maze Theory adds a disclaimer in the video and caption that the game is a work in progress, so everything shown is subject to change.

Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars essentially acts as a side story to the book and film, stepping into a chapter of the mission that Andy Weir wrote for the new adventure game. It's biggest selling point is likely the promise of more Rocky, with the Meta page listing the opportunity to "Work alongside Rocky" as a key feature. The trailer features a brief clip of Rocky running toward the player inside his enclosed habitat, and the Meta page shows him responding to a player waving and giving him a thumbs-up with his own gestures.

The game was originally announced for a late 2026 release, but that window still hasn't been narrowed down into a specific release date, and a delay is always possible. Nonetheless, it's already possible to pre-order the game for $17.99 on Meta Quest, a discount from an MSRP of $19.99, and receive three gold xenonite sculptures in-game as a pre-order bonus. A release is also planned for PICO and Android XR.

Developer Maze Theory is no stranger to licensed VR games, previously delivering Peaky Blinders: The King's Ransom and several Doctor Who tie-ins, along with Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow. The studio cites its "experienced industry veterans" as a credential, listing Activision, Sony, PlayStation, Oculus, EA, and a variety of film and television companies as former places of employment. Hopefully, Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars will build on the team's experience with VR storytelling to deliver the immersion that Project Hail Mary fans are looking for.
