Project Hail Mary Box Office Passes One Final Global Milestone As 3-Month Theatrical Run Nears End

Project Hail Mary's incredible theater run is nearing its end.

Based on Andy Weir's novel, the sci-fi adaptation took the world by storm after setting an Amazon record for the biggest debut ever with $80 million domestically. Project Hail Mary's box-office potential only got better after its March release, as it set more records for the studio. As a result, Amazon even extended its theatrical run beyond the 45 days due to its commercial performance.

As Project Hail Mary's box office slowed with new releases landing in theaters, the sci-fi thriller managed to surpass one final global milestone. According to Box Office Mojo, it's just past $680 million worldwide, which includes an incredible $343 million domestically. Project Hail Mary is leaving most theaters aside 291, indicating that its run is coming close to an end.

With a $200 million budget, Project Hail Mary proved itself to be a box-office dynamic. While the Weir adaptation just falls short of hitting $700 million, it doesn't take away the immense success that the Amazon movie experienced since its March release. Not only did Project Hail Mary break studio records, but it also became the highest-grossing Weir adaptation, breaking the record set by Ridley Scott's The Martian.

Much of the success was due to the positive reception and word-of-mouth following its release. Project Hail Mary reviews praised the beautiful narrative, the heartwarming chemistry between Ryan Gosling's Ryland Grace and the alien Rocky, and the beautiful visual spectacle of their space travel. With award consideration also in talks, it currently has a 94% critics' score and a 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Now, the movie is making its way to home viewing, as it's already been available through video-on-demand since mid-May. It was also recently confirmed that Project Hail Mary will land on MGM+ streaming on June 18, which coincidentally marks three months after its release.

Project Hail Mary uncovers an unconventional friendship between a human, Ryland Grace, and an alien Eritean named Rocky. As the relationship evolves, they work together to save their planets as a mysterious organism kills off their suns. Alongside Gosling, the cast features Sandra Hüller, James Ortiz, and Lionel Boyce.
