How Kate Middleton Expertly Turned Down Autograph Request to Avoid Breaking Royal Rule

These lucky tourists got the royal treatment.

What began like any other day in London’s historic Borough Market soon took an exciting turn when Kate Middleton and Prince William emerged behind the counter at various businesses, serving up coffee and other treats to passersby.

During the couple’s visit to the marketplace—which has existed for more than 1,000 years—they browsed a selection of products from cheesemonger Todd Trethowan, poured perfect pints at Southwark Brewing Company and handed out dessert at Humble Crumble.

In addition to Kate brewing up what was sure to have been a perfect cappuccino for William at one stall, the couple also handed out flowers outside the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. There, the pair suited up into lifejackets and waterproof gear before getting a trip on one of the organization’s orange vessels, learning about the Institution’s important work.

The March 12 outing marked a lighthearted occasion for the couple—as did March 9th's Commonwealth Day—amid what has been a challenging time for the family at large following Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s arrest on Feb. 19.

The former royal’s arrest—which occurred on his 66th birthday and was related to charges of alleged misconduct while in public office—came amid mounting scrutiny over Andrew’s relationship with late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein

Following his brother’s arrest, King Charles III issued a statement in support of law enforcement.

“I have learned with the deepest concern the news about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and suspicion of misconduct in public office,” Charles said in a statement that same day. “What now follows is the full, fair and proper process by which this issue is investigated in the appropriate manner and by the appropriate authorities.”

Reiterating his and wife Queen Camilla’s prior statements that authorities have their “full and wholehearted support and cooperation,” the 77-year-old added, “Let me state clearly: the law must take its course.”

As for how the investigation develops, Charles noted, “It would not be right for me to comment further on this matter. Meanwhile, my family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all."

Marius Borg Høiby—the eldest son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit and step-son of Crown Prince Haakon—was arrested Feb. 1 for assault, threats with a knife and violation of a restraining order, Oslo police confirmed in a statement to The Associated Press.

The 29-year-old—who does not carry a royal title or official duties—is being kept in detention for up to four weeks over risks of reoffending after the Oslo district court granted the request. His attorney Petar Sekulic told the outlet that they are considering appealing the decision.
