Betsey Johnson is bringing a pop of color to the red carpet.
The iconic fashion designer made a rare red carpet appearance at the Elton John AIDS Foundation’s annual Oscars viewing party, where she offered her hot take on this year’s award season fashion trends.
“I see a lot of black,” she said in an exclusive interview with E! News at the event in Los Angeles March 15. “I like a little more color. Black is safe.”
But the 83-year-old admitted she was keen to take in all the looks at the charity gala—hosted by Elton John and his husband David Furnish—noting, “I haven't looked around yet—we just got here!”
The appearance marked a rare red carpet appearance for Betsey, who electrified the event in a neon pink feathered skirt and black top with sheer sleeves, styling her blonde locks in a loose updo. And while the vibrant ensemble was sure to turn some heads, she was more concerned with feeling comfortable in her own skin.
“It feels good to have something that's appropriate and happy and [that] I feel good in,” she explained, “because these things are terrifying to me. I'm not a red carpet girl.”
As such, she offered some simple advice for the stars as they hit the party scene for Hollywood’s biggest night.

“Wear what you want that makes you feel good,” she offered. “Don't pay attention so much to what is the trend or what's going on, because there aren't any anymore.”
Still, Betsey has been keeping her eye on one particular superstar who’s made quite a splash in recent years, with the hope of teaming up on a personalized ensemble.
“Chappell Roan is my girl,” she shared. “I met her, been at a concert with her, seen her concerts, but I would love to dress her.”
Of course, the stars brought their A-game to this year’s Oscar festivities. To see all of this year’s best dressed celebs, keep scrolling…
