Prime Video's New Carrie Trailer Expands Stephen King's Original Story

A new Carrie trailer has arrived.

After several movie adaptations, the Stephen King novel is getting the television treatment for the first time, with Mike Flanagan as the showrunner of the eight-episode miniseries. Summer H. Howell plays the titular character, Carrie White, who faces cruelty and pressure in high school and her home life, all while discovering that she has telekinetic powers. This culminates in a new iteration of the iconic prom massacre from the original novel and Brian De Palma's 1976 film.

Prime Video has now released a new official trailer for Carrie, which teases how the series reinvents and expands King's source material. The footage also hints at how the other characters will receive more depth and complexity over the course of eight episodes, along with exploring who Carrie really is and what actually happens during the night of the prom massacre in Chamberlain, Maine. Howell was cast as Carrie after a long search, in which approximately 1,500 actors read for the role. Other members of the Carrie cast include Samantha Sloyan as Margaret White, Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen, Joel Oulette as Tommy Ross, Josie Totah as Tina, Arthur Conti as Billy, Thalia Dudek as Emaline, Amber Midthunder as Miss Desjardin, and Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle.

While many elements of the novel will remain the same, the trailer and comments from those involved in the show have indicated several substantial changes as well. Flanagan previously told ScreenRant about how Margaret White, a major Stephen King villain, starts out by genuinely loving Carrie and "fiercely protecting her" in this version of the story as opposed to already being the abusive mother she is in the book.

Other changes include that Carrie's father has only recently died, she is just now attending public high school for the first time, and the bullying will take on the form of a viral scandal. Additionally, the series will highlight other women who have telekinetic powers, just like Carrie does, on a more global scale than in the book. How the story reaches key moments, including the prom massacre, will also be different.

In addition to being the showrunner, writer, and an executive producer, Flanagan directed episodes 1, 2, 7, and 8. His wife and frequent collaborator, Kate Siegel, directed episode 3. She is a recurring guest star in the series, as are Michael Trucco, Rahul Kohli, Crystal Balint, Tim Bagley, and Heather Graham. Episodes 4, 5, and 6 were, respectively, directed by Axelle Carolyn, Kyra Sedgwick, and Hiromi Kamata, and King serves as an executive producer.

Flanagan previously adapted three Stephen King movies, including Gerald's Game, Doctor Sleep, and The Life of Chuck. Carrie is the first time that he has adapted one of King's stories for television, although he is also working on an in-development television series of The Dark Tower and is attached to a film remake of The Mist.

All eight episodes of Carrie will be available to watch on October 7, only on Prime Video, in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
