Prime Video's Hit 8-Part Mystery Series Is So Good, It's Already Renewed For Season 2

While it is great news that Prime Video’s latest mystery series just received a second season renewal, this won’t come as a surprise to anyone who has seen the show’s deservedly acclaimed debut outing. While fantasy romance shows like Bon Appétit, Your Majesty and Outlander may use genre elements to get viewers invested in their far-fetched stories, grounded romance shows have a more traditional way to keep their audiences engaged.

From Heated Rivalry to Off Campus to Netflix’s genre juggernaut Bridgerton, modern romance shows have taken an admirably frank and explicit approach to sex that many viewers find refreshing. After years of gritty shows like HBO’s Game of Thrones, AMC’s The Walking Dead, and Shudder’s horror anthology Slasher taking full advantage of the graphic violence that looser censorship allows, these recent romance hits have been some of the first light-hearted shows in the genre to take the same approach to onscreen sex.

However, one glance at the romance novel shelf in a local bookstore proves that explicit sex alone does not guarantee success in the genre. There are plenty of romance novels, and plenty of shows based on them, that are comparatively PG-rated in their approach to the subject, and this has done nothing to hurt their popularity. Netflix’s eight-season hit Virgin River might be a quiet, sweet small-town romance, but it is also a bigger hit than the Squid Game franchise, Wednesday, or Stranger Things in terms of sheer longevity. Prime Video’s Sterling Point charted a similar path.

Sterling Point's Critical & Commercial Success Made Season 2 Inevitable

Coming from the pen of The Fallout and My Old Ass’s Megan Park, Sterling Point isn’t quite as demure as Virgin River. However, the story of Ella Rubin’s conflicted heroine Annie inheriting an island from her late grandfather, alongside her twin brother Connor, owes as much to Virgin River’s sweet small-town romance and the coming-of-age drama of Dawson’s Creek as it does to more recent, fast-paced and explicit romance shows.

Without R-rated sex scenes to keep viewers invested, Sterling Point instead offers a twisty mystery that is as compelling as anything from the heyday of One Tree Hill without entering into the outright thriller territory of shows like Pretty Little Liars or Riverdale. While the show is undoubtedly a mystery and a compelling one that unfolds gradually over season 1’s patient story, viewers shouldn’t be expecting an Agatha Christie series, or a small-town thriller in the vein of Sharp Objects.

Instead, the mystery of why Annie and Connor inherited this island, and their family’s messy history, feels like a blend of recent romance shows like The Summer I Turned Pretty with ‘00s classics like The O.C., Dawson’s Creek, and even Gilmore Girls. Although the show isn’t based on a book, Sterling Point does share the small-town nostalgic romance vibes of Prime Video’s recent Carley Fortune adaptation Every Year After, but its central mystery ensures Park’s series has more narrative drive to keep viewers invested.

How Sterling Point Season 1 Set Up A Larger Story

Without giving away too much to readers who have not yet watched Sterling Point season 1, suffice to say it is easy to see why Park’s show earned its season 2 renewal. The small-town romantic mystery has a perfect cliffhanger set up for season 2, as Connor and Annie learn a truth about their family’s shadowy past that changes everything for the siblings at the end of Sterling Point’s season 1 finale.

Since the show’s guest stars, Missi Pyle and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, already tethered season 1’s story to the older generation of the Jacobson family, season 2 can now expand this plot to illustrate the rest of the island’s murky history. Meanwhile, Annie’s continued attempts to work out who she is in light of these recent revelations ensure that Sterling Point season 2 will have a personal edge as well as a wider, community-spanning story to tell.
