A portion of the iconic Santa Cruz Wharf collapsed into the Pacific Ocean just after noon today. The last 150 feet of the 2,745 foot long structure dropped into the Pacific, according to local officials. They said at least three people were on the wharf when it broke up, two of whom had to be rescued.

The wharf was being buffeted by a massive winter swell pushing 15-20 foot waves across Santa Cruz Point just one mile north.

Footage shown on local and national TV news showed a tattered segment of the pier floating on the swell with at least one person walking across the debris.

The current Santa Cruz Wharf was built in 1914 and has been featured in a number of classic films. Most notably, it provided the electric nighttime tableau for the flying vampire POV shots in The Lost Boys. You can see that scene below.

The adjacent Santa Cruz Boardwalk was the setting for that film’s carousel scene wherein Kiefer Sutherland and his vampire crew get into it with a security guard. It was also the backdrop for the the scene where Jason Patrick’s Michael first sees Jamie Gertz’s Star. If that doesn’t jog your memory, the love connection takes place at a concert with a shirtless oiled-up saxophone player. Watch it below.

In all, the wharf and boardwalk have been featured in at least two dozen films and TV shows, according to its official website. Those include, Harold and Maude, Bumblebee, Us, Sudden Impact and The Sting II.
