Pop Culture Has Its New Pikachu, And It's Coming from Marvel

Jared is a writer, editor, and Communications Studies graduate who loves popular nerd culture (almost anything to do with Marvel, DC, Star Wars, or The Lord of the Rings) and the interactive storytelling medium. Jared's first console was the PS1, wherein he fell for Spider-Man, Spyro the Dragon, and Crash Bandicoot.

Jeff the Land Shark may not have been the first adorable Marvel critter to be smothered in affection and popularity in popular culture (and he certainly isn’t the last), but he’s made a tenable argument for fans being unable to get enough of cute little guys. Of course, any character is at risk of oversaturation when they become ubiquitous in a short period; for instance, it’s debatable whether fans still love Grogu/Baby Yoda, or are sick of seeing him.

This doesn’t seem to be an issue that Marvel has with Jeff, however. Jeff’s comic outings have been tremendously successful, with Kelly Thompson and Tokitokoro’s Jeff the Land Shark limited series earning a 2026 Eisner Award nomination, and his popularity skyrocketed following his debut in Marvel Rivals. Now, in a brand-new Jeff the Land Shark miniseries, it’s suddenly possible that an even cuter Marvel character could dethrone the land shark in his own book.

Marvel’s Pikachu Is Not The Hero You’d Expect

Jeff the Land Shark: Superstar is essentially a treasure trove of Marvel character variants, including Wolvie-Kawaii, a lovely critter who belongs to the Berserker X-Men team alongside a handful of other Wolverine variants and resembles Pokémon’s Pikachu. Indeed, issue #1 is a whirlwind unto itself:

JEFF THE LAND SHARK RETURNS...WITH A WILD NEW CAST! THANKS A LOT, MOJO! JEFF HAS BEEN KIDNAPPED! All-star team Kelly Thompson and Tokitokoro return with a brand new Jeff the Land Shark adventure! Mojo is determined to create the latest hit show...and sends the Marvel Universe into an UPROAR when he KIDNAPS beloved pet-slash-friend of heroes, Jeff the Land Shark - and his klepto companion Ken! But Jeff’s not the only star of the show - prepare to meet the likes of DAZZLESTORM, WOLVERINE-MAN, RAMBIT and MORE!

Marvel Is Milking Jeff The Land Shark For All He’s Worth

It would not be out of the realm of possibility at all for Wolvie-Kawaii to become as popular as Jeff, and perhaps that’s the goal (Marvel would be so lucky). It would be phenomenal if every new character became wildly popular, but Wolvie-Kawaii has an undeniable plushie potential, turning the hyper-violent and mature character of Wolverine into a Pikachu-like creature.

Likewise, Marvel is doing its best to keep Symbie in the zeitgeist via the symbiote’s appearances in Joe Kelly’s Amazing Spider-Man run and its own Infinity Comic. It’ll be fascinating, to say the least, seeing what other characters appear throughout the rest of this bizarre and amusing miniseries. The solicitation for issue #2 reads as follows:

MEET THE JEFF COAST AVENGERS! Jeff the Land Shark’s NEW FAMILY takes center stage as Mojo tries to create a HIT SHOW starring Jeff, DazzleStorm, MagikHot and...an attack by a group of angry man-sharks?! How will Jeff get out of this one?! And will his friends back home be able to rescue him?!

The premise of this book basically suggests that it’ll be a fun character generator, even if none of the characters who debut in it actually make a big enough impact to warrant them having appearances elsewhere. It’s unknown if they will make it out of the pages of Jeff the Land Shark: Superstar, as it’s likely one of countless fun characters, but if anyone has a shot at reaching the same stardom that Jeff has enjoyed, it’s Wolvie-Kawaii.

It’d probably be tough to justify Wolvie-Kawaii making its way into Marvel Rivals as a playable character, which may eventually be the true litmus test for whether a new, cute Marvel character’s popularity has been transcendental, but it would be excellent to at least have Wolvie-Kawaii become a plushie accessory dangling on the actual Wolverine.

Jeff the Land Shark: Superstar #1 is out now.
