The Pokémon Trading Card Game's new Prismatic Evolutions set includes a new Umbreon card that calls back to one of the most expensive cards of the modern era. Today, The Pokémon Company revealed a first look at the special illustration rare versions of the various Eevee-themed cards in the upcoming Prismatic Evolutions set. The new set includes a new Umbreon ex card featuring the art of the Dark-type Pokémon sitting in front of a full moon with its Stellar Tera crown glistening in the moonlight.
The new card seems to specifically hearken back to a similar card released as part of the 2021 set Evolving Skies, which featured a Gigantamax Umbreon pawing at the moon in the sky. That card, nicknamed the Moonbreon card, specifically became one of the most sought-after cards in modern Pokémon history, with the card still selling for over $1,200 on sites like TCGPlayer and eBay. Some have speculated that the special illustration rare cards in Prismatic Evolution would turn into major secondary market sellers, with the new Moonbreon an early target for speculators.
Will Prismatic Evolutions' New Moonbreon Card Sell For Big Bucks?
The Previous Moonbreon Card Still Sells For Over $1,000
The new Prismatic Evolutions set will focus on Eevee and its respective evolutions, with new Stellar Tera Pokémon ex cards featuring each Pokémon. The set will also contain over 30 new special illustration rare cards, which have quickly become the big chase cards for Pokémon card collectors. Prismatic Evolutions is a "special" Pokémon TCG set that won't have a standard booster pack release. Instead, booster packs will only be available in boxed products like Elite Trainer's Boxes and Special Collection Sets.
Because of this release schedule, it means collectors will either have to pay more money for multi-booster pack products or seek out cards on the secondary market. It also means that Prismatic Evolutions will be harder to find in stores because they can't be bought from typical booster pack boxes or sleeved booster packs. This means that top chase cards from the set will have higher prices on the secondary market, simply due to low supply.
Screen Rant's Take: Moonbreon Will Send Prismatic Evolutions Speculation Into Overdrive
Speculators Could Snatch Up Prismatic Evolutions Products From Stores, Making It Harder For Players To Find
While it's unclear whether the new Umbreon ex card is going to be a meta-relevant card, the new Moonbreon card will likely still be a hot item for collectors on the secondary market. For one, Umbreon is one of the most popular of Eevee's evolutions. Additionally, the use of a similar motif as the previous "Moonbreon" card will drive interest from both collectors and speculators.
Unfortunately, this could push a new glut of speculators towards snatching up whatever Prismatic Evolutions they can find in stores, making it harder to collect for actual players of the game. However, one silver lining is that recent special sets like Scarlet & Violet -151 have stayed in print. We hope that Pokémon TCG will release multiple waves of Prismatic Evolutions to help satisfy demand.
