The tricky fox gets its own Community Day
Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Game Freak/Nintendo, The Pokémon CompanyPokémon Go is having a Zorua Community Day event on Saturday, Oct. 10 from 2-5 p.m. in your local time. This Community Day only features the original Unovan Zorua, not the normal- and ghost-type Hisuian Zorua.
As a reminder, Zorua will initially appear as whatever Pokémon is set as your buddy. Once you catch it, it'll transform back into a Zorua, similarly to Ditto.
As expected with a Community Day event, Zorua will spawn in huge numbers with a high chance for it to appear shiny. There are also several other bonuses and perks, which we've listed out below.
How do I catch a shiny Zorua?
As per old research by the now-defunct website The Silph Road (via Wayback Machine), shiny rates on Community Days are about 1 in 24, which means that if you keep playing throughout the three-hour window, you should find quite a few shiny Pokémon.
Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Scopely ExploreIf you're short on time or Poké Balls, you can pop an Incense, then quickly tap each Zorua to check for shiny ones, running from any that aren’t shiny. Notably, any Zorua you've already tapped will face where your player is standing, so that should help identify which ones you may have already checked.
If you evolve Zorua into Zoroark from 2-9 p.m. in your local time, it will learn the fast move Sucker Punch.
If you miss out on evolving it during this period, you will likely be able to evolve it during a Community Day weekend event in December to get Sucker Punch. If you don't want to wait, you can use an Elite TM to get the move.
Zoroark is not great in any form of content, whether its PvE (raids and gyms) or PvP.
You can set it up with Sucker Punch and Foul Play if you want, but you shouldn't really bring this into your raids or into PvP.
The following bonuses will be active during Zorua Community Day:
- Tripled XP for catching Pokémon
- Doubled candy for catching Pokémon
- Doubled chance for level 31+ trainers to get XL candy from catching Pokémon
- Incense lasts three hours
- Lure Modules last 1 hour
- Zorua special photobombs when taking snapshots
- One additional special trade
- Stardust cost halved for trading
That said, you should definitely pop a Lucky Egg and an Incense and try to nab some powerful Zorua.
If you can Mega Evolve Gyarados, Houndoom, Tyranitar, Sableye, Sharpedo, Absol, Greninja, or Malamar, you’ll score additional Zorua Candy per catch.
Also, if you're hunting for excellent throws for a Masterwork Research or one of the higher level requirements, you may want to consider setting your buddy to a Pokémon with a large catch ring during this event. We recommend something like Snorlax, Wailmer, or Gourgeist, but you can use whatever you're good at landing excellents on.
Additionally, if you're sick of the Zorua "Oh?" animation, you can skip this by setting a Zorua as your buddy, allowing you to make faster catches. Quick catching will also bypass this animation.
Scopely Explore is also continuing the "Lure Module Bonus" it's been running for the last year. From 2-9 p.m., Zorua will spawn in high numbers from placed Lure Modules. Even after the Community Day ends at 5 p.m., you can still find a shiny Zorua (or one with a Special Background) from lures with the increased Community Day shiny rate.
