Considering how rich and storied Batman’s villain tapestry is, it is always neat to see which iconic antagonist will be brought back from whatever hole they have been kept in to wreak havoc on Gotham City and be renewed in a new run or relaunch. That said, one immensely powerful and sophisticated character has transcended their traditional role as a mere ‘villain,’ and is presently riding a remarkable wave of popularity: Dr. Pamela Isley’s Poison Ivy.
Poison Ivy certainly is not the first Batman villain to receive their own comic book and be molded into a well-rounded character. But her surprising new role in DC’s Prime Earth/Earth-0, as well as the burgeoning and spectacular Absolute mythology, is a testament to how much terrific development there still is to mine for her in 2026, 60 years after she first appeared in Batman #181 (1966).
DC’s Poison Ivy is All the Rage Right Now
Poison Ivy has arguably always been a popular villain in Batman’s rogues’ gallery. However, she is quite prominent lately between DC’s main continuity and the highly successful Absolute universe:
- Absolute Batman #17 debuted Absolute Poison Ivy, a demonic monstrosity who was initially teased at the Ark M Isley Ecosystem biome in Absolute Batman #10.
- Poison Ivy has her own titular, ongoing comic book run, written by G. Willow Wilson and drawn primarily by Marcio Takara, where she recently became Mayor Pamela Isley of Gotham City.
- Mayor Isley will be featured in the upcoming issue of Matt Fraction and Jorge Jiménez’s Batman run, appearing on the cover of Batman #8, releasing on April 1.
Gotham City’s imperfections are unending, and that extends to the fact that, somehow, its police commissioner is currently Vandal Savage. Likewise, as of Poison Ivy #42, released on March 4, 2026, its mayor is now Dr. Pamela Isley.
The details of her election win with a whopping 70% of the vote have been left conveniently ambiguous. It is an interesting development for Pamela’s character, anyhow, regardless of whether she continues to be sympathetic as the protagonist of her own ongoing run or backslides into her more sinister, misanthropic, and eco-terrorist roots.
Dr. (Now Mayor) Pamela Isley Deserves It
Absolute Poison Ivy, in particular, has been a creative reinvention of the character that draws from not only flora, but “all six kingdoms of life”—plantae, animalia, fungi, protista, eubacteria, and archaebacteria. She was defeated in Absolute Batman #18, meaning her arc was only two issues long, but she has an opportunity to be reprised later on in the series, as she was not definitively killed.
It could be worse; Dr. Pamela Isley could have been reduced to a brain and eyeballs suspended in a fluid tank like Bane in Absolute Batman #14, and it is anyone’s guess as to how a horrific creature like her will be detained. Either way, Absolute Poison Ivy was a treat, complete with a tragic backstory (a common thread for many of this continuity’s interpretations of classic comic book villains, delicately balancing compassion and brutality on a knife’s edge).
Meanwhile, it will be fascinating to see what effect Mayor Isley has in Earth-0, such as whether she and Batman will join forces in opposing Commissioner Savage. Batman and the Bat-family are going to be on the run, with Vandal Savage’s pursuit of them ultimately resulting in Batgirl’s arrest and the subsequent DC: Next Level book Barbara Gordon: Breakout, suggesting that Mayor Isley may be one of their only lifelines as corruption spreads like an aggressive weed.
Batman: Arkham Shadow’s prequel Easter eggs teased Dr. Pamela Isley’s Poison Ivy transformation being imminent, and it would have been special to see her origin story in the Arkhamverse explored if it was not for a sequel to Camouflaj’s Meta Quest 3/3S-exclusive being canceled.
