Jared is a writer, editor, and Communications Studies graduate who loves popular nerd culture (almost anything to do with Marvel, DC, Star Wars, or The Lord of the Rings) and the interactive storytelling medium. Jared's first console was the PS1, wherein he fell for Spider-Man, Spyro the Dragon, and Crash Bandicoot.

Besides being stuck with green as a staple color in her chlorophyll-forward palette, you’d be hard-pressed to find a Poison Ivy design that isn’t wild and inventive in any DC media, even if that’s largely due to her distinctive flora motif and persona as a misanthropic seductress. Indeed, Poison Ivy’s best costumes aren’t often her most subdued ones, as they are usually the ones where it simply looks like she’s wearing a green bodysuit, whereas she can look striking and celestial whenever unique colorways, plantlife, and garments are interwoven.

Mayor Pamela Isley is Stylish as Ever

Ever since she became mayor, covers for G. Willow Wilson and Marcio Takara’s ongoing Poison Ivy comic book series have represented a wide breadth of artistic interpretations for her new look. Poison Ivy #45’s main cover is drawn by Jessica Fong, for example, with variants illustrated by Noobovich, KyuYong Eom, Manny Vincent Carbonilla, and Don Aguillo (DC Pride), showcasing how malleable a vest, jacket, and a pair of pants can be.

It was an opportune moment for Mayor Pamela Isley to debut this look, too, as it could be juxtaposed with Absolute Batman’s Isley Ecosystem Poison Ivy, an eldritch-horror monstrosity. If Poison Ivy hadn’t received a redesign when she did, she would’ve undoubtedly paled in comparison to her Absolute universe continuity counterpart.

In fact, Absolute Poison Ivy and Mayor Pamela Isley’s designs are proof that the ceiling couldn’t be higher in terms of how much potential and versatility the character still has nearly 60 years after her first appearance in Batman #181 (1966). If cosplayers have adored Poison Ivy but felt intimidated or overwhelmed by how elaborate her classic comic book costumes are, Mayor Pamela Isley is a revitalizing redesign that will hopefully leave its mark on DC and become as iconic as any other she’s had.

It’s a Much Easier Look to Cosplay

Mayor Pamela Isley may not be everyone’s favorite look for the character, but it should hopefully be a layup for cosplayers who have struggled to create bodysuits or articles of clothing that authentically evoke and incorporate bark, vines, leaves, moss, wreaths, and other such greenery. Furthermore, its modesty doesn’t sacrifice its allure.

If nothing else, Mayor Pamela Isley could be a diverse option for cosplayers who may wish to jut out from a room full of other Poison Ivy cosplayers who may default to a green bodysuit layered with leaves. Some iterations of Poison Ivy are distinguished enough for them to be more readily identifiable due to nuances in their designs, such as the Poison Ivys who appear in The New Batman Adventures or The Batman (2004), but Mayor Pamela Isley could be a look that transcends them all in terms of simplicity and iconography.

Cosplaying Absolute Poison Ivy will not be for the faint of heart, no matter how excellent and otherworldly it could look. Meanwhile, cosplaying Mayor Pamela Isley will be a piece of cake, and cosplayers could even exercise their creativity with it, as variant cover artists have already done.

For the foreseeable future, anyone who attends a comic book convention with red hair and wearing a green pantsuit will be recognized immediately as cosplaying Mayor Pamela Isley—that’s literally all it’ll take. Even if it wasn’t intentional, this design has bestowed upon fans a Poison Ivy look that is unbelievably easy to achieve, and one that would also be practical as clothing someone might realistically wear to a formal function, depending on the shade of green they were to choose.
