LEGO's next console collaboration will apparently be with PlayStation, and this one is shaping up to be more affordable than some of the alternatives. In recent years, LEGO crossovers with video game brands have become increasingly common, with sets ranging from a LEGO Nintendo Entertainment System to a PAC-MAN arcade cabinet.

According to leaker LEGO_Minecraft_Goat on Instagram, a model of an original PlayStation is up next, as reported by Polygon. Slated for a December retail release, the PlayStation set will cost $159.99 or €159.99 euros. For that price, you'll get 1911 pieces and models of "at least the controller and the console."

A Classic Console Returns

While we don't have any pictures or additional details about the LEGO PlayStation set yet, other console sets provide a reasonable frame of reference for what to expect. The NES set came with models of a console, controller, TV, and Super Mario Bros. cartridge, while an Atari 2600 model skipped the TV in favor of three game cartridges and more extensive interior details.

Both of these sets contained more pieces than the PlayStation reportedly does. Based on the reported price and piece count, the PlayStation might stick to the console and controller without additional accessories, or perhaps throw in a replica game case for one iconic title. Something published by Sony would be most likely, so a game like Crash Bandicoot or Gran Turismo could appear. I'd be thrilled to see FF7, which Sony published outside of Japan, but sorting out the rights to that one would likely be more complicated.

This LEGO Set Is Cheaper Than We Expected

It Could Be A Lot Worse

NES LEGO Super Mario Bros

$159.99 is nothing to sneeze at, and you could easily get several working PlayStations for less. Given the scale of modern LEGO collector models, though, it could be a lot worse. The Atari 2600 retailed for $239.99, and the NES and PAC-MAN Arcade both upped the price to $269.99. 1911 pieces for $159.99 is also a good price-to-piece ratio by LEGO standards, although you should expect a lot of those pieces to be small.

Hopefully, we can get an official look at the LEGO PlayStation set sometime soon and hash out all those details. The investment probably won't make sense for casual PlayStation fans, but if the console means a lot to you, the LEGO replica could be easy to justify. If it's anything like previous console sets, you can expect plenty of Easter eggs and clever building techniques to make the process of building a large rectangle worthwhile.
