PlayStation Gamers Split Over Unexpected Rebrand And Name Change

Brands are strengthened by traditional naming conventions that catch on and can be weakened when they make seemingly arbitrary, alarming changes to them, as is the case with PlayStation apparently discarding a piece of its branding synonymous with its online services. It appears that PlayStation Network will have a new name this fall, and fans are not particularly pleased with the decision.

As per Insider Gaming, an email sent to developers explains that “Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has strategically decided to phase out the terms ‘PlayStation Network’ and ‘PSN’ across [the] platform in order to properly capture the breadth of [its] evolving digital services.” Now, accumulating a lot of buzz on Reddit, users are sharing their opinions on how PlayStation Network’s branding may take shape.

PlayStation Is Looking To Rebrand, Apparently

It is not unusual for companies to revise their branding occasionally; HBO, for example, recently went through a mercurial period, bouncing from HBO Max to Max and back to HBO Max again. Still, fans have been quite vocal about this news, questioning why the PlayStation Network branding requires a change in the first place.

For instance, Reddit user MrTreezx argues, “PSN… Clean, cut and simple. What the [f***] why the change?” User Aileos is unperturbed, however, as they feel it will make little difference: “Whatever they’ll choose, I’m sure this is gonna be like Twitter changing into X. Everybody will say PSN.”

Amusingly, some of the half-joking, half-serious names fans have hypothesized on Reddit include: “PlayStation Live,” “Sonyverse,” and “PlayStation Max,” yet user rubbernub and many others believe PlayStation Network’s branding will merely be folded into PS Plus, especially if the overall aim is to “simplify and unify branding,” as the email says. As for how the suite of online services will be affected, fans need not fret.

What Does This Mean For The PlayStation Network?

Effectively, nothing will change functionally about the PlayStation Network. As the email purportedly states, “The upcoming changes are purely visual and will not introduce any technical alterations to our offerings,” and “all features currently associated with PSN, including core network features such as friends, multiplayer, and trophies, will remain unaffected and available to players.”

This is great news for anyone who did not wish to see the actual functionality of PlayStation’s digital services tampered with. And if its branding changes with a new name for PlayStation Network, it will be interesting to see how well it is received by the system’s community, or whether it will be colloquially referred to as PSN regardless.
