The ninth console generation began in late 2020, officially making the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One obsolete. Six years later, plenty of games are still coming to both outdated systems, but a major multiplayer game is beginning to end support for the consoles in early June, perhaps signaling a larger shift in abandoning the systems.

One of the most prevailing innovations of the PS4 and Xbox One is widespread crossplay, which was exceedingly rare at the beginning of the eighth generation, but commonplace now. One of the major titles that helped popularize crossplay is now ramping down support for the aging consoles.

Call of Duty: Warzone will start "reducing the services offered" to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One starting June 4, says publisher Activision. "Support for these platforms [will be] coming to an end later this year." This comes ahead of Modern Warfare 4's launch in October, which will see the annual Warzone shake-up as it is integrated with Call of Duty's latest release.

The most important facet of this slow end to service is that, starting June 4, Warzone will no longer be downloadable from the storefronts on the PS4 and Xbox One, and the game will be delisted. This will be followed by the in-game store being removed from the PS4 and Xbox One versions on June 25. When Warzone officially flips over to its new Modern Warfare 4 version in autumn, the game will no longer be playable on the old consoles.

If you have Warzone downloaded on your PS4 or Xbox One, it will remain playable through the end of Black Ops 7 Season 06. It's important to note that the June 4 delisting does not affect users' ability to download the game if it is already in their digital library. It is only direct downloads from the PlayStation Store and the Microsoft Store that are affected.

Call of Duty Black Ops 6 Season 4 Warzone new skyscraper Outlook

This year's Modern Warfare 4 will be the franchise's first game to abandon the eighth console generation. It is also the first title in many years to release concurrently on Nintendo hardware, coming to the Switch 2 alongside PS5, Series X/S, and PC on October 23. Big multiplayer changes are coming in the new installment, but for the ongoing Warzone, officially dropping support for the consoles it originally launched on is a major milestone.

Every season of Warzone has been playable on its original hardware thus far, and CoD enthusiasts who haven't upgraded to new hardware will be left behind. Call of Duty remains an exceedingly successful franchise, being one of the best-selling games every year – more often than not, it is the bestseller. Dropping Warzone support for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One was likely a decision not made lightly, but it was inevitable, especially as we begin turning attention toward the PlayStation 6 and Xbox's Project Helix.
