Phil Dunster (Ted Lasso, Rooster) has joined the cast of Universal Pictures’ live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2 as Eret, son of Eret.
Dunster joins Mason Thames, Nico Parker, Gerard Butler, Cate Blanchett, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James and Harry Trevaldwyn in the sequel. Dean DeBlois returns to write, direct and executive produce the next entry in the franchise.
Though Eret is a bit of an antagonist in the animated films, Drago is the real villain. Deadline broke the news that Severance‘s Ólafsson will portray Drago.
The film is set to release June 11, 2027. The second animated film watched Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel) discover a whole secret fortress of dragons new to his eyes, and, that his mother wasn’t dead after all. Blanchett, who voiced Hiccup’s mother Valka in the animated film, will reprise the role alongside Butler, who does the same as Hiccup’s father Stoic.
Marc Platt (Bridge of Spies, La La Land, The Trial of the Chicago Seven, Wicked) will produce for his Universal-based Marc Platt Productions alongside Adam Siegel, President of Marc Platt Productions.
SVP Production Lexi Barta will oversee the film on behalf of thestudio.
The combined four films that follow Hiccup and Toothless through the skies have grossed more than $2.2 billion. The franchise is based on the bestselling books series by Cressida Cowell. Universal’s live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon soared to a global box office of $636.4 million last summer, delivering the franchise’s biggest box office performance.
