Phasmophobia Is Getting A Major Overhaul That Will Affect "Every Contract You Play"

2 weeks ago 8

Heading into 2025, Kinetic Games, the developers of Phasmophobia, have given players a brief preview of what's to come in the game's next major update. Originally released in October 2020, Phasmophobia is one of the earlier examples of an objective-based co-op horror game in a similar vein to later releases like Lethal Company and Content Warning, tasking players with gathering evidence to identify ghosts in haunted locales. Four years after its release, the game is still in early access on Steam but is receiving steady updates.

In a blog post on the Kinetic Games website, Phasmophobia's developers shared a preview of the content planned for the game's next major update, coming at an unspecified date in 2025 - an update which the post characterizes as "a large overhaul which will affect every contract you play." The update will include major changes to some of the game's systems, including the Journal and the post-contract quality system, as well as other additions like new equipment and a map rework.

A Major Update Is Planned For Phasmophobia In 2025

The biggest addition in Phasmophobia's next update will be some major changes to the game's systems, most notably a new "Media" tab in the Journal, replacing Photos. The Media tab will function similarly to the current Photos page, but with the notable addition of captures from video cameras and a new piece of equipment, the Sound Recorder, as well. Replacing quality, captures will instead be rated for being "Unique", with repeated capture types offering less money and XP.

Phasmophobia Blood Moon Event Starts Just In Time For The Console Release

Phasmophobia has released on console today, just in time for the new collaborative Crimson Eye event, also known as the Blood Moon event.

Interactions, in the upcoming update, will be captured with video instead of photos, further incentivizing players to get a variety of capture types, and videos will get their own section on the Media tab of the Journal. The kinds of things that can be captured on video, according to the blog post, include events like "a door closing on [its] own, an apparition in a DOTS projector, or even a moving Planchette on [a] Ouija board" - things which would be hard to meaningfully capture in still photos.

Additionally, the update will add the previously mentioned Sound Recorder, a new piece of player equipment with which they'll be able to record "unique paranormal sounds" for the Media tab of the Journal, giving a third type of capture for players to hunt down. Outside the Media tab, the blog post also promises a rework of the Bleasedale Farmhouse location, with an overhauled layout, visual improvements, and completely new areas. Finally, the post teases a mysterious addition to the Grafton Farmhouse, in relation to Krampus.

Currently, there's no set date for the previewed update, but it's in development for 2025, so players might be able to hope for it sooner rather than later. There's no set date for Phasmophobia leaving early access, if it ever does, but further updates should continue to improve the game going forward.
