In a recent interview, Paris Hilton opened up about her experiences with ADHD and RSD, also known as rejection sensitive dysphoria. During the intimate interview, she spoke about how it has affected her throughout her life and how she has coped with it in her day-to-day life.
The socialite, DJ, and businesswoman told all on The Skinny Confidential Him & Her Show. Despite not having been officially diagnosed with RSD, she believes she has it. It is a condition that makes a person feel deep emotional pain when experiencing rejection or failure.
The condition is often linked to ADHD. However, the link is still being studied, and research is in its early stages. For Paris Hilton, her RSD can become so intense that it begins to feel like physical pain. Dealing with her own feelings of rejection and failure can become crippling, and she has struggled with it for years.
"It's kind of just like this, almost like a demon in your mind. That is like saying negative self-talk to you. It's like very difficult at some times, but now I know it's not real. It's just like the RSD kicking in."
Although not officially diagnosed, Hilton says she knows she lives with RSD. She links it to her ADHD. However, her approach to her ADHD is not a defeatist one. Instead, she has embraced her mind's ability to work on a million things at once and describes her condition as a superpower instead.
ADHD can often lead to people being labeled as less intelligent or overly distracted. But recent studies have found that, when approached in a way less conforming to typical society, it can actually be a boon to people's productivity. For Hilton, her ADHD has given her the ability to achieve.
"In school, it was so difficult for me. As hard as I would study, I could never remember anything. I was always failing my tests. I was just always in detention, getting in trouble."
But, as Hilton grew, she realized she could take control of her ADHD, work with it, and become more productive. Now, she hopes to help other people with ADHD know that with the right guidance, patience, and working conditions suited to them, they can be just as productive and happy as someone without.
"It doesn't have to be something that holds them back in life. It could be something that they can harness as a superpower to really go for their dreams in life."
However, the RSD Hilton has, in connection with her ADHD, isn't quite so easy to harness as a 'superpower'. Her feeling of almost physical pain that comes along with failure and rejection is a struggle. But she's learning to live with it and hopes to raise awareness through her own experiences.
