The NCIS universe is the longest-running television franchise, having been on the air for over 20 years and featuring six spin-offs. The franchise has had several offshoots throughout the years, with many having concluded or been cancelled. 2024 saw an atypical spin-off join the NCIS ranks. NCIS: Origins, as the series is titled, focuses on the franchise's most famous character, Leroy Jethro Gibbs (played by Austin Stowell). The series chronicles his early days at NIS, where he honed his skills and instincts under the leadership of Mike Franks (Kyle Schmid). With an 88% score on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, NCIS: Origins remains the highest-rated NCIS spin-off and has received acclaim for its storytelling.
While other spin-offs focus on characters in different parts of the country and world, NCIS: Origins turns back the clock to explore the mysterious Gibbs. The series expands his world by introducing younger versions of characters fans know from the flagship series, while adding some new ones. NCIS: Origins also balances procedural and serial elements well, making it a perfect hybrid for the made-for-streaming era of broadcast television. This format is working well for the show, which recently returned with new episodes on CBS and has broken into Paramount+'s top ten most-watched shows according to FlixPatrol. The series is ranked 10th at the time of writing, a ranking that could improve as new episodes are released.
