After months of teasing, we finally have a release date for Onimusha: Way of the Sword. As per Sony's latest State of Play showcase, the 1500s-Japan-set action-RPG is scheduled for release 25th September, on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. And there is a demo live, and available to play, right now.

Announced back in 2024, Way of the Sword is the fourth mainline game in Capcom's long-running series, which debuted on the original PlayStation back in 2001. Way of the Sword's newly revealed September release date means it's officially arriving some two decades after the series' most recent entry, 2006's Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams. For fans, it's been a long one.

The trailer takes more of a look at the narrative of the game, compared to previous trailers that have focused on gameplay. It's all very dramatic as you'd expect. I think most of the staff here at Eurogamer will be playing this one in Japanese.

Today's announcement isn't a complete surprise: rumours of a September release target for Way of the Sword have been making the rounds in recent times. And today's confirmation makes it the latest game from a major publisher to put a pin in the calendar well away from GTA 6's release date.

Capcom has, of course, had a killer 2026 so far, with both Resident Evil Requiem, and Pragmata breaking sales records. While the Japanese publisher does not necessarily need another release in 2026 to deliver an all-timer of a year, it'll be interesting to see if Capcom can make it a hattrick.

Things are looking promising. Our very own Dom Peppiatt played Onimusha: Way of the Sword nearly a year ago, and it mostly reminded them of their time with Nioh and Nioh 2, which is just about the best praise you could give this.
